Jason Hickel writes in a substack article titled 'The staggering death toll of Western sanctions', that, "The United States and Europe have long used unilateral sanctions as a tool of imperial power, to discipline and even destroy Global South governments that seek to shake off Western domination, chart an independent path, and establish any kind of meaningful sovereignty."
Both the U.S. Europe have and continue to impose sanctions knowing that they would cause deaths and rely on those deaths to cause unrest and eventual regime change which would then enable them to take control of the the government and install their puppet regime.
Case Study: Venezuela
The US first imposed sanctions on Venezuela in 2005, after citing a fabricated narrative that he country's failed to cooperate with US anti-drug and counter-terrorism efforts.
US economic warfare against Venezuela utilizing sanctions resulted in a severe economic crisis, with one study estimating that sanctions caused 40,000 excess deaths in just one year, from 2017 to 2018.
Most recently we were able to observe the culmination of US imposed sanctions in real time as President Trump illegally imposed a maritime blockade on Venezuela, with nary any outcry from U.S. citizens, before kidnaping President Nicolás Maduro and installing a puppet government headed by Delcy Rodríguez .
In one fell swoop, the President Trump took total control of Venezuelan oil and the largest oil reserve in the world, deprived the revenues revenues from Venezuela citizens and was able to halt crucial Venezuelan oil sales to China and Cuba.
It was especially important to cut-off oil from China who Trump sees as a rising hegemonic competitor and therefore a dangerous enemy.
Is it any wonder that Global South countries hate and despise America and Americans?
