On June 19, 1865, Union Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas and issued General Order No.3, enforcing the Emancipation Proclamation in Texas, officially ending slavery in the United States. Since then, Juneteenth has been celebrated every year, before officially becoming a federal holiday in 2021.

On this day, we honor the freedom of Black people who were enslaved, especially those who were deliberately kept long after the Emancipation Proclamation in the South. Juneteenth is a reminder that liberation has always required persistence, community, and collective action. Voices of Florida Fund celebrates this day while continuing to fight for dignity and liberation for all.

Why are powerful CEOs silent while the VRA is being gutted? Let’s flood the inboxes of major companies to say, “you defended voting rights in the past, and it’s time for you to stand up for democracy again!”

Voter apathy, or disinterest in voting, often stems from a sense of disappointment. Constituents feel let down by election results and begin to believe their vote doesn’t have power. The truth is, voting is more important now than ever. As legislators fight to disenfranchise voters across the nation, it is critical for every person who can vote to cast a ballot, especially in midterm and local elections. Voices of Florida Fund will continue to fight for the rights of all voters in the state of Florida and beyond. Arm yourself with knowledge by visiting 866ourvote.org or Election Protection.
