📚🇲🇼Meet Moses, our first Power Student to attend university and the first in his family to complete secondary school.

During our recent trip to Malawi, we spent an afternoon with Moses on campus, where he is now in his third year studying Social Work and Youth Development.

He shared what university life has been like, reflected on the path that brought him here, and told us about speaking to current Power Students at this year’s Education Is Power camp.

Moses’ story is one of resilience, opportunity, and a growing desire to help other young people move forward too.

We spent an afternoon near Malawi’s capital, Lilongwe, catching up with Moses Humphrey, our first Power Student admitted to university.

Now in his third year studying Social Work and Youth Development, Moses showed us around campus and reflected on the journey that brought him here.

Before joining Education Is Power, Moses had dropped out of school. Today, he is building a future he once thought was out of reach.

Morning in M’Mbaluko💧

During our recent visit to Malawi, our team spent the night in M’Mbaluko village and joined community members at the well the next morning.

Before this well was completed, families relied on an unsafe open water source down a long, steep path. Now, clean water is close to home, and the morning routine looks very different.

Peaceful. Joyful. Safe.

This is what clean water makes possible.

Happy Birthday to Jervas! 🎉

As one of our Education is Power coordinators, Jervas is a constant source of encouragement and guidance for our students. Moses, our very first university-admitted Power Student even credits Jervas as the inspiration behind his decision to pursue studies in social work.

Need a random historical fact? Ask Jervas.
Need a contact for literally anything? Ask Jervas.
Need an unexpected laugh? Definitely ask Jervas.

We're grateful for all the knowledge, connections, wisdom, and good humor he brings to The Sonder Project every day.

Join us in wishing him a fantastic year ahead! 🎂🎈

Our team recently spent a night in M'Mbaluko village, Malawi, where a well completed in November 2025 is now providing clean water to more than 300 people.

💧🇲🇼For the people of M'Mbaluko, this moment was a long time coming.

Before the well, families depended on an unsafe open water source located a long, steep walk away. Women and children often spent hours collecting water, facing risks from wildlife and occasional conflict with neighboring communities relying on the same source.

Today, that daily reality has been transformed.

During our visit, the community gathered in celebration with poetry, drama, song, dance, and an appearance from traditional Gule Wamkulu dancers. Local chiefs, school leaders, and the community water committee responsible for helping maintain the well all joined the festivities.

"School teachers started to wonder why children's attendance shot up suddenly from this village, until we realized there was a new well," the headteacher of the local school shared with the crowd.

With clean, reliable water now close to home, M’Mbaluko is already looking ahead. Less time spent searching for water. More time for school, family, farming, and possibility. This is what clean water makes possible.

The latest from Burkina Faso: 12 new well mechanics are trained, certified, and ready to serve their communities.

💧As part of our Water Is Our Right program, these mechanics were nominated by 10 different communities where The Sonder Project has drilled wells. Each participant completed hands-on training, received a professional toolkit, and committed to helping maintain Sonder wells whenever repairs are needed.

They are also equipped to provide repair and maintenance services for other wells nearby, creating new opportunities to earn income while strengthening local water infrastructure.

Because building a well is only the beginning. Keeping clean water flowing for years to come requires local skills, local leadership, and long-term community ownership.

Thank you to Northern California Peace Corps Association for making this training possible!

A key part of our Education Is Power program is showing up for the students we sponsor, not just through tuition and boarding support, but through ongoing mentorship, encouragement, and care.

Our Education Coordinators regularly visit students at school and stay connected with teachers and administrators to check in on academic progress, wellbeing, and any challenges students may be facing along the way.

During our recent trip to Malawi, we had the chance to visit students Nester, Esther, Patricia, Precious, Maggie, Madalitso, and Ethel at school and, in some cases, at home too. 💛

These visits are a reminder that support is not just about opening the door to education. It is about walking alongside students as they move through it.

We can’t wait to see all they go on to become.
