PART 10: Can I speak to existing members before joining The McGuire Programme?

Absolutely. In fact, we actively encourage it.

For most people, the first step is reaching out to us through our website, social media channels, or contact form. From there, you'll usually have a conversation with your local Regional Director.

And don't worry about that call.

We know exactly what it feels like to pick up the phone when speaking is difficult. Most of us have been there ourselves.

During that conversation, we may suggest speaking with one or more existing members to get another perspective on the programme, the techniques, the support network, and the realities of life after the course.

It's also a chance to hear directly from someone else who has been where you are now.

Whenever possible, we'll try to connect you with someone of a similar age, profession, background, or experience so you can ask questions and get an honest view of the programme.

We also regularly invite prospective members to visit courses, attend webinars, join open days, or speak with members at support events.

The McGuire Programme has always operated with an open-door approach. We have nothing to hide and encourage people to do their research, ask questions, and make the decision that's right for them.

Find out more in this next video, or get in touch if you'd like to speak with a member.

Stuttering doesn’t have to stop your voice from being heard.

A long-standing member of the McGuire Programme Ireland recently took on the challenge of appearing on the Untangled Podcast in Belfast, openly speaking about their experiences with stammering and the journey beyond fear and avoidance. 🎙️

What makes moments like this even more special is seeing members continue to grow long after their first course. From student, to coach, to instructor, giving back, supporting others, and continuing to push themselves beyond old limitations.

Speaking openly on a podcast is something many people who stutter once believed would be impossible. Yet here we are.

FYI: Not every member chooses to share their journey publicly, and that’s perfectly okay too. Many quietly move beyond stuttering in their everyday lives, at work, with family, on the phone, in meetings, or simply by no longer holding back from saying what they want to say.

Whether public or private, every step beyond fear and avoidance matters.

PART 9: What does it feel like to finally say what you want to say?

One word: Freedom.

Freedom from constantly thinking ahead.
Freedom from avoiding words and situations.
Freedom from hiding.
Freedom from the exhausting cycle of fear, panic, tricks, and avoidance.

For many people, it’s the first time they truly feel present in conversations instead of trapped inside their own heads trying to “manage” every moment.

At The McGuire Programme, members learn how to self-analyse, understand their speaking behaviours, and develop strategies for real-life speaking situations, instead of relying on old habits and tricks that may feel safe in the moment but ultimately keep the cycle of fear alive.

We also talk a lot about self-acceptance.

Not self-acceptance through giving up or staying stuck, but through ownership, honesty, action, and learning how to move forward despite fear.

That’s where real confidence and freedom begin to grow.

PART 8: Many people who stutter spend years trying to hide it, from friends, family, colleagues, or even from themselves.

They change words.
Avoid situations.
Stay quiet.
Hold back.
Do anything possible not to stutter.

But over time, this can create even more fear, tension, avoidance, and anxiety around speaking.

At The McGuire Programme, we believe honesty is one of the first steps toward breaking that cycle.

Not honesty through struggle or “showing” stuttering, but honesty through openness.

Opening up about what we are doing.
Sharing why we are working on our speech.
Taking ownership instead of hiding.

The more we stop living behind avoidance and fear, the more freedom and progress many people begin to experience.

PART 7: Day 2 of a McGuire Programme course focuses on the psychological side of stuttering, the fear, embarrassment, shame, guilt, panic, and avoidance that so many people carry for years.

This is where we begin facing the “iceberg” beneath the surface.

Because stuttering is often not just about the words we struggle on, it’s about the situations we avoid, the opportunities we hold back from, and the constant anticipation of what might happen when we speak.

Through support, action, coaching, and challenge, members begin learning how to assertively accept themselves and their stutter, not by giving up, but by doing something positive to improve the quality of their lives.

And that can be incredibly empowering.

Find out more about “melting the iceberg” and facing fear in this next video.

PART 6: We talk a lot about Costal Breathing within The McGuire Programme. But what is it and why is it so important?

Speech is powered by air.

Without airflow, the voice struggles to work freely and naturally. Yet many people who stutter stop breathing effectively the moment panic, fear, or anticipation appears.

The body freezes.
Tension increases.
Airflow shuts down.
Words become trapped.

For many people who stutter, breathing was never truly part of the speaking process, at least not in a controlled, purposeful way.

Costal Breathing helps reconnect breathing and speech. It helps members learn how to keep air moving, reduce tension, and build a stronger foundation for speaking under pressure.

This isn’t about “relaxing.”
It’s about learning how to respond differently when fear and panic try to take over.

PART 5: On the first day of our course, we begin learning the physical techniques used within The McGuire Programme to take control of stuttering.

Through intensive practice, coaching, and real speaking situations, members begin developing a new relationship with speaking, learning how to respond instead of react.

The focus is not on hiding a stutter, but on building stronger, more disciplined speaking habits that can be used in everyday life.

Sharing a post from Emmet O'Connell via LinkedIn.

For many people who stutter, the workplace becomes a place of limitation rather than opportunity.

Not because they lack ability.
Not because they lack intelligence or work ethic.
But because communication becomes the barrier that others focus on.

Before joining The McGuire Programme, I was already productive, reliable, and good at what I did. I hit deadlines, worked hard, and contributed consistently.

Most of my work was technical and computer-based, so speaking wasn’t really part of the role… until it was.

As my career progressed, communication started to matter more.

I still remember being told during a yearly review that I had so much potential, but my speech and level of communication were holding me back and holding the company back from giving me more opportunities beyond technical drawing work.

That stayed with me.

Not because it was cruel, but because there was truth in it.

I knew I could offer more if I could get beyond the fear, struggle, avoidance, and limitations surrounding communication.

That support from my workplace played a major role in me joining The McGuire Programme.

After my first course, things slowly started to change. I began volunteering for situations I would previously have avoided. Representing the company at events. Giving presentations at colleges. Speaking to groups.

One moment I’ll never forget was standing on a stage handing out awards at the same college where years earlier I struggled just to get my voice out.

This is why workplace culture, HR, and personal development matter.

There are many talented people quietly sitting in offices who are already valuable employees, but whose full potential remains hidden behind communication fear and avoidance.

Sometimes the right support and opportunity can completely change the direction of someone’s career and their life.

PART 4: What is stuttering?

Put simply, stuttering is the inability to articulate or vocalise words and sounds in the way we want to.

But stuttering is often much more than just what people hear on the surface.

Underneath can be fear, avoidance, tension, panic, anticipation, shame, frustration, and years of trying to hide the struggle from others.

For many people, it impacts not only speech but confidence, relationships, opportunities, and everyday life itself.

In this next video, we look deeper into what stuttering really is and why so many people feel trapped by it.

Some people join the McGuire Programme feeling completely stuck.

Others arrive exhausted from years of avoiding words, situations, phone calls, introductions, meetings, ordering coffee, or simply saying their own name.

And then there are members who come back years later, not because everything has fallen apart, but because they want to reconnect, sharpen things up again, support others, and spend time around people who truly understand the journey.

That’s what makes a McGuire course unique.

Different people.
Different levels.
Different goals.

But all working together.

Our next intensive course takes place in Düsseldorf from 25–27 June 2026.

Three days focused on speaking, action, support, connection, and pushing beyond what fear says is possible.

Whether you are considering your first course or haven’t attended one in years, you are always welcome.
