Whatever happened to that apartment building that was in the news last year? You’re probably thinking of 215 Bath (now listed as 221 Bath) the West Beach apartment that was the focus of renovictions (renovation evictions).
Despite what some local reporters say, the fight for basic tenant rights is not over and neither is the electrical work that landlords claimed was the reason why they needed the original tenants to leave.
9 original tenants are still living at 215/221 Bath with over 50 SBCC students. The electrical work is still incomplete and one original tenant (that lives in a new unit) does not have enough electrical power to use his microwave and refrigerator simultaneously.
In addition to the electrical issues, tenants have had their cars towed for no reason and management is still unresponsive and unable to give timelines on construction. The City Inspector has been to the property numerous times, but issues remain.
While 215 Bath is an extreme case, it highlights the need for a strong Rent Board where tenants and landlords can resolve real problems in a timely issue. As one former tenant said, 3 years later the electricity should not still be an issue in a fully occupied building with children, elderly and working folks.
