SMART Paws

SMART Paws SMART Paws is an animal rescue in the Great Lakes Bay region of Michigan. As a new rescue, we are starting small. Follow us and the animals in our care.

Follow us as we work toward creating an enriched home-like environment for felines and small animals in an all-inclusive animal sanctuary. We have several dedicated foster homes caring for cats that are available for adoption. Our goal is to build a sanctuary for animals and to offer community education programs.

UPDATE: All kittens were taken in by Midland County Pit Stop. 😊

We received a call from a gentleman named Chester in Farwell who had thirteen 5-6 week-old kittens dropped off. He has been calling other rescues but has not heard back. We are still so full and trying to recoup from our huge vet bills and are unable to take in any animals at this point. If there are any rescues that could even take some, let us know, and we will give you his number. They are a variety of colors, but we not laid eyes on them to confirm their age.

We have another courtesy post for a senior cat that needs to be rehomed due to a change in a living situation. Only serious inquiries for a forever home as she does not need any more changes in her precious life. The following is from her current owner who loves her dearly but feels she would be better suited in a quiet home where she can get a lot of attention.

"Gizmo is 12 years old and has had one owner. It's with a heavy heart that I reach out at all on this matter. For several reasons that are no fault of hers, she would benefit from an excellent home where she can be a lap kitty and retire in peace. A quiet home is preferrred with humans who can appreciate a senior cat and allow her to be herself. She is fixed and has claws still. She will need patience to adjust as she's been through a lot in the past few months with a move and family change. She needs someone who loves cats and can dedicate the time and attention needed to give her the best life. Please message me if interested, serious inquiries only. This needs to be her forever home, if chosen."

Just a quick update on Trooper. This guy had to go back into River Rock Animal Hospital for another quick cleaning out. It was determined by Dr. Adams, that his one inch of colon that was left was stretched out, and in combination with the further narrowing of his opening due to his injury 8 years ago, was complicating matters. His foster mom is giving lactose along with daily e***as for two weeks in the hope that his colon will regain some of the elasticity lost. Each e***a has become a bigger battle, with his foster dad having to restrain. Day 4 has just been completed. Trooper has regained his appetite and was even counter surfing this morning, which he didn’t even do prior to all the latest complications. We are praying this helps him get to some normalacy, with the understanding that he will always need to be monitored extremely closely. In the meantime, it’s becoming quite the s**t show! πŸ₯ΉπŸ’©πŸˆβ€β¬›

12 of these beautiful felines are ours, since there was finally space to take more. We also have lots still in our foster homes that we will be posting over the next couple of weeks.

Our audacious Adira, whose name means mighty and strong, is actively advocating for her new home. This 8.5 year old wants her own people time without all the hooligans and wannabes in her foster home that are taking away her undivided attention she craves, while disturbing her beauty rest with games of cat chase and other crazy antics. If anyone who has a quiet home and is looking for a single companion, please ask to meet this terrific tabby. A picture of her as a kitten is attached. She was returned last year during the ice storm up north when a family member was going through some health issues.

Thursday, we transported Apollo to Battle Creek for a blood transfusion after he was taken to M-20 animal hospital due to his rapid weight loss and other symptoms. His red blood cell was critically low, so we greatly appreciate Dr. Ben for squeezing us in. Apollo is now eating and playing, but it is speculated based on his bloodwork that he has dry FIP. His paw pads are also swollen, so he will need to be on an antibiotic. With the recent and ongoing medical issues with our Trooper (obstipation), Coal (thyroid), Dinah (seizures), Katniss (seizures), Sophie, Samira, and Shae (Feline eosinophilic granuloma complex), and Calypso. Zaina, and Kimba (kittens undergoing FIP treatment), along with some current kits with upper respiratory issues, we really could use some prayers and positive vibes.

Unfortunately, it is with great sadness that we recently lost our Quincy, after his cancer came back that he had surgery for last spring, and our Dasher, who was a semi feral dealing with undiagnosed IBD over 5 years of his 10 years with us. Both passed away quickly on their own in their foster home. πŸ˜ΏπŸ’”

Another update on a recent adoption, this one from the Cozy Cats Cafe. Zealand came to us with his two brothers and sister as babies. Prior to getting his neuter date set up, his foster mom noticed that he was acting lethargic and his abdomen was getting larger despite having been on a regular schedule of deworming. Long story short, Zealand was diagnosed with the wet form of FIP and went through the 84 days of treatment and an additional 84 + days of observation, after his bloodwork came back normal. He had watched first his two brothers leave to be adopted together and then his sister. Finally it was his time to find his furever home. His new mom fell in love with him, and Zealand is now thriving with all the attention. 😻🐾πŸ₯°

Our first egg hunt for dogs went well and is a great springboard for future years. The dogs had so much fun, a couple of which insisted on picking ip the eggs themselves. With about 1,000 eggs with treats in them, the dogs scored well, and their humans had some surprises in certain eggs.
Thank you to all that participated in the egg hunt, basket raffles, cat adoption event, and photos with Emily Rose Photography! We will hopefully be announcing the adoption of one of our kits soon.
