The Sands Point Preserve on the original Guggenheim Estate embodies the grandeur and opulence that define the Gold Coast period of the early 20th century, when prominent American families built great mansions on large estates as summer retreats along the Long Island Sound. Scott Fitzgerald’s “The Great Gatsby.”

Today, the magnificent 216-acre park, including its historic mansions and the Phil Dej

ana Learning Center, is owned by Nassau County, NY, and is maintained and operated by the Sands Point Preserve Conservancy, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, formerly the Friends of the Sands Point Preserve. The Conservancy provides year-round educational and cultural programs, seasonal celebrations, mansion tours, fitness activities as well as private/corporate event services and film/TV location facilities.

How it started ➡️ How it’s going

Last summer, with generous support from the Nassau County Soil and Water Conservation District, we partnered with Coastal Technologies Corp. (CTC) and Spadefoot Ecosystem Solutions to halt the rapid erosion of a portion of our coast. We used CTC’s innovative cliff-stabilizing devices to hold native plants on the bluff face. Once the roots established, we removed the devices leaving the plants to do their job securing the loose soil.

One year later and it is clear that the project worked!

Did you know we’ve created a new ecosystem at the Sands Point Preserve?

Using the expert services of Spadefoot Design & Construction, we’ve taken water that was previously buried and piped from the pond and brought it aboveground to re-emerge as an open stream and marsh habitat. And thanks to the generous support of the Nassau County Soil & Water Conservation District, we’ve created a stream corridor buffer, which uses soil sculpting and native vegetation to ensure the ongoing health of the ecosystem.

Stop by to watch the birds and other wildlife enjoy this new piece of the park!

Earlier this month, over 200 people gathered to celebrate Gala Blanca: An Evening in France, honoring Jack Mandel. It was a beautiful night filled with music, dancing, laughter, and…mimes! (For a full recap of the evening, please check our Facebook photo album.)

As importantly, Gala Blanca raised significant funds for the Sands Point Preserve Conservancy, ensuring that we can continue to protect and promote the natural, historic, and community resources of our beloved park.

Thank you to all our sponsors, supporters, partners, and guests, for making the event such a tremendous success. We are grateful to you all!
