Marrakesh has been a tremendous step forward in ending the global accessible book famine for people with blindness and visual impairments, resulting in more than 840,000 accessible titles, including 281,000 in English, 111,000 in French, and 55,000 in Spanish. The fight for equal access continues today, as the technical details of country-by-country implementation are worked out by partner organizations and libraries.

A thrilling read from Andrew Heiskell Braille and Talking Book Library's Chancey Fleet on bringing to patrons in NYC and beyond:

"Although alt text—the description of images online—allows content authors to describe important visuals, the adage that 'a picture is worth a thousand words' falls flat when only words are available. It’s important to experience a stock chart, a circuit diagram, or a map as intended—that is to say, as an image. Textual descriptions of items like these, if they contain all the information in the original image, are painfully verbose and frequently fail to deliver pertinent insights with the precision of an image[...] The power of images to convey information precisely and concisely through spatial representation, however, isn’t inherently visual at all. For blind readers, learners, and creators, tactile graphics—images rendered legible by touch—open up the world of spatial communication."

Access to rich imagery shouldn’t be something that blind or low-vision people have to do without. These projects are helping.

Two exciting announcements this month in the world of reading accessibility! First, The New York Times introduced a new app, NYT Audio, that presents subscribers with a selection of the paper's daily reporting, culture writing, and feature-length magazine articles from an array of sources. We applaud the Times for their initiative and hope you'll check it out for yourself: https://www.nytimes.com/2023/05/17/podcasts/audio-app-journalism-storytelling.html

Secondly, we want to give British Vogue their flowers to celebrate the occasion of their first-ever full Braille + audio issue. Featuring "brilliant, beautiful and impactful Disabled talents from across fashion, sport, the arts and activism," the articles are available in audio, print-at-home Braille, or, in the UK, via Braille by mail. You can read the announcement, and access the audio version here: https://www.vogue.co.uk/article/may-2023-issue-audio-braille

New York Times Audio provides news, depth and serendipity.
