Cedars Life Supporting individuals with developmental disabilities since 1919. campus in Ross and our ten group homes in Novato and San Rafael.

Cedars has been serving individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities since 1919. Our success stems from how we we work together with the people we serve - - as individuals deserving of respect, personal choice, and the chance to develop interests, skills, and independence.​

There’s a feeling of family among the approximately 100 people served at Cedars community based residences, including Generoso Pope, Jr. Our unique and innovative day programs serve over 150 individuals each weekday. Off-hours are spent enjoying music, art, sports, nature and, above all, friendship.

Cedars is known for its life affirming, loving environment in which personal accomplishments are celebrated, individual skills are recognized and participants are able to live creative, productive and joyous lives. "...individuals here are people with capabilities, not disabilities."

You're Invited to
CEDARS SHORTS AT THE LARK! 🎬

The Cedars program includes a brief introduction to Cedars, short films about the lives of several Cedars clients, and a series of animated shorts created by Cedars artists with art instructor Daniel Krakauer. The stories range far and wide: a cat on a determined quest for fish, an epic fantasy adventure, and a tale of aliens with a distinctly Marin twist.

After the screenings, a panel discussion with Daniel and the featured Cedars animation artists will give the audience a chance to hear from the filmmakers about their stories and how they brought them to life.

K. Leigh Alfrey's "Garden Pond" is the featured artwork for September in our 2026 Cedars and Marin Art & Garden Center calendar.

A maker in many ways, K.Leigh quietly creates drawings from nature in watercolor or acrylic paint and colored pencil. She applies her material patiently, building up the surface section by section with color or tiny marks that sometimes result in mosaic-like patterns. K. Leigh is also an excellent weaver and sewist, producing fabric and small craft items with her skills. She is very proud of the work she does and enjoys connecting and sharing it with others.

K. Leigh enjoyed visiting the garden. She liked the flowers and the green lily pads!

This week gave us a special chance to celebrate Cedars DSPs, but the truth is that your patience, compassion, and hard work drive our mission forward 365 days a year.

This weekend, for the first time ever, Cedars has been invited to be part of the Mill Valley Art Festival, and we hope to see YOU there! (Sat & Sun 10 am - 5 pm, downtown Mill Valley in the Redwoods)

This year's theme, Art For a Better World, highlights the talents of neurologically diverse artists and supports MVFAF's mission to build community through inclusion and connection.

Cedars will be exhibiting alongside Helpers (San Francisco) and returning group Art Without Boundaries Group — representing Oak Hill School, the Helix School, and PAASS.

Cedars will have art and jewelry for sale, plus you can stop by to learn all about us and pick up some swag.

Every day, Cedars Direct Support Professionals help make everyday moments possible.

They may sit beside someone at the easel or the loom, helping them explore a new material or finish a piece in the Fine Art Studios or Textile Arts Collaborative. They may support someone as they learn a new skill—like cooking—, get ready for work, connect with friends, make choices about their day, or take part in the community. They celebrate progress, offer encouragement through setbacks, and build relationships grounded in trust and respect. Often, their greatest impact is found in moments that may seem small to others but can mean greater independence, confidence, connection, and belonging for the people they support.

During Direct Support Professional Recognition Week, we honor the people behind this essential work. It is a chance to say thank you, but also to help more people understand why DSPs matter.

Happy DSP Week! 🎉

National Direct Support Professional (DSP) Recognition Week is an annual celebration that highlights the life-changing contributions of the direct support professional workforce. From September 13th through September 19th, human service organizations across the country take positive steps to acknowledge Direct Support Professionals (DSPs).

Cedars is honored and blessed to have such wonderful DSPs as part of our Cedars family. Every day, they bring value to our community. The work they do is so important to the people we serve. We appreciate all the lives they touch and the families they support.

We encourage everyone in our community to thank the Direct Support Professionals you know this week. Because of them, we're able to offer more programs and services to the people we support. We also encourage everyone to learn about the vital work DSPs provide and to help us advocate for public policies that improve the lives of the people they serve. Every citizen should know the essential role DSPs play — and help ensure these services remain available when they, or someone they love, needs them.
