Just in time for my birthday, we finally get the new FB page up and running! Woot woot! Here is a brief history of how Trans Heartland began...
When I was a child... just kidding!! Long, long ago, in a land far away...no, that’s not it either!!...Once upon a time... in a doctors office in a City so expensive, I saw opportunity in a lack. There was a lack of safe, affordable post-operative housing and an opportunity to help others. My initial thought was to rent a 3 bedroom apt and sub-rent out the other two rooms since I traveled extensively.
Insert my own surgery, a divorce, and a greater depth of need for after surgery care than I realized. It cost me upwards of $10k for post-op housing, a caregiver, medical supplies, food and transportation. My idea of renting a room to a fellow traveler became a full time job of also providing emotional, Spiritual and physical support. The first few folks that came my way, didn’t have the funds to take care of themselves financially. Mostly due to the fact that their spouse, partners, or significant others left them while they were in the hospital recovering from surgery.
There are many reasons people need help with temporary housing. Some have sick children (Ronald McDonald Houses, St Jude housing, etc), some have expensive surgeries that require months of recovery. Insert the Trans HearLine House. The struggle is real to just exist in this world, without laws being passed against you for just using the restroom. In the transgender population, a good bit of us desire surgery. There is no reason we should go broke to live congruently.
