Kids often read a parent's silence as agreement. Katie learned that the hard way. For months she could not talk about what happened or name her own guilt, and her son quietly decided that meant she had known all along. The moment he heard she was the one who called law enforcement, everything shifted. He finally understood she had been fighting for him. When we go quiet to protect ourselves, children fill in the story with their own fears, and sometimes with the words of the person who harmed them. Naming the hard thing out loud, even imperfectly, is often what lets a family start to heal. Silence rarely protects kids the way we hope it will.
