Not enabling an addict can seem so counter-intuitive to a Christian. After all, the Bible teaches us to "carry each other's burdens" (Galatians 6:2), right?
But if our enabling only serves to help our addicted loved ones to avoid the consequences of their inappropriate behavior, then we have become part of the problem. Our "helping" is only prolonging and worsening our loved one's addiction.
Still not convinced? Read Proverbs 19:19 (GNT): "If someone has a hot temper, let him take the consequences. If you get him out of trouble once, you will have to do it again." This principle can be applied to virtually every enabling situation, including addiction.
Replace your enabling behaviors with those listed in today's graphic. If you have difficulty breaking the enabling habit, join a codependency support group, like Celebrate Recovery, for prayer and encouragement from others in like-situations.
"For we are each responsible for our own conduct" (Galatians 6:5, NLT).
Be blessed in Christ!
