No small business should feel pressured to publicly align itself with any political group, individual, or social media platform out of fear of losing community support.
We typically choose to stay out of social media disagreements, but occasionally something deserves to be addressed.
Recently, the idea was expressed that local businesses should be boycotted if they do not publicly support or participate in a particular social media page or its viewpoints.
We find that sentiment deeply disappointing.
Small businesses are the backbone of communities like ours. Behind every storefront are hardworking families, employees, and individuals who pour their time, energy, and resources into keeping their doors open.
No small business should feel pressured to publicly align itself with any political group, individual, or social media platform out of fear of losing community support.
There is a difference between exercising your right to express an opinion and expecting others to publicly participate in that opinion.
At Main & Monroe, we have always believed that our purpose is much bigger than politics. We are here to serve our community, create jobs, provide a welcoming atmosphere, and offer a place where people can come together and enjoy themselves.
Our dining room is not a political platform, and our hospitality does not come with political conditions.
We respect everyone’s right to express their opinions, but we also believe that businesses have the right to remain neutral without being criticized or targeted for doing so.
Our community has so much to offer, and our local businesses work far too hard to become casualties of disagreements that have nothing to do with the services they provide.
Community support should bring people together, not be used as leverage to pull them apart.
We will continue to focus on good food, great hospitality, and being a positive part of the community we are proud to serve.
