For some patients, getting better is about more than medicine. It's also about having enough food at home.
That reality led Park Nicollet Methodist Hospital colleagues to think beyond screening for food insecurities. They focused on helping patients connect with community resources before they left the hospital.
In partnership with STEP--St. Louis Park Emergency Program, patients experiencing food insecurity are sent home with 2-3 days’ worth of food.
“These patients are sick and recovering, so it’s really nice for them to actually leave with something tangible they can go home with and use right away,” says Kendra, a clinical nutrition supervisor at Methodist.
Since February, we’ve handed out more than 50 food boxes.
A healthy recovery takes more than medical care. Sometimes, it starts with making sure a patient has food on the table.
