This image illustrates perfectly what so many miss. Every July/August I see the struggle of many families attempting to get their kids ready for school and often people have negative things to say when they post looking for help.

I understand many think that because education is offered in a public setting at no cost, that the access to it is fair or equal. Allow me to explain what this image may represent in this scenario.

Public education being free to everyone falls under the image of “Equality”. Everyone receives the same access. Right?
Unfortunately free education is not equality.

Let me make it simple, let’s say we have two families we are comparing.

Fam A
🧍🏽🧍🏼‍♀️🚘🏠
Has two working adults in the home, they own at least one vehicle and their children attend public school. The kids get picked up by the school bus at the community 🚌and receive free breakfast and lunch because their neighborhood is eligible under tittle 1. Parents are able to comfortably afford purchasing the uniforms 👕👖and school supplies 🎒needed ahead of the year and if things get a bit harder financially they can comfortably attend the community events since they have a car and two adults who can manage the schedules.

🧍🏼‍♀️⛺️👧🏻👦🏻

This family only has one working adult. She is a single mother who fled a domestic violence relationship to protect her children and herself from abuse. She uses uber/lift to make it to work everyday and only makes minimum wage. She uses all her income between camping fees and ride share and she is doing her best to keep the kids safe, fed and with her. This family also has access to public school but can’t afford to buy uniforms or supplies and a major stressor is getting the children to school because campsites in Hillsborough county only allow stays of 15 days so the 🚌 can’t be assigned to the children. This parent can’t afford supplies nor has the ability to miss work plus find transportation to the giveaways in the community.

In this example, the children do not have equal access to education. While they both can receive it free of charge, their circumstances are very far and different from each other.

What will it take for the children in both families to receive equity from an education perspective?
