Who remembers Tom Franklin, Roswell Reads' feature author back in 2012? The book he discussed at that time was CROOKED LETTER, CROOKED LETTER. The title derived from the way southern children learned to spell the word "Mississippi," where the novel was set.

Franklin has only written two novels since then and the newest, DEVILWOOD, is going to be released on 02/02/2027. "With lyrical storytelling and razor-sharp prose, Devilwood is a masterfully tense novel where the lines between human predator and supernatural evil blur, and where the sins of the past are never, ever buried deep enough."

Drawing upon his personal experience growing up and working in Alabama, Franklin sets his books in the rural South, which he portrays as rife with conflict and violence. He incorporates themes of poverty, race, and sexual deviance in his writing.

IT'S LITERARY PRIZE SEASON! Two Atlanta authors recently were named recipients of prestigious awards.

Tayari Jones, an Emory University professor, has won the Kirkus Prize for Fiction for her novel “Kin.”

Justin Haynes, an Oglethorpe University professor, has won Stanford University’s William Saroyan International Prize for Writing for his novel “Ibis”

The Booker Prize has announced its Short List for 2026.

Potential record: If M. John Harrison wins for "The End of Everything," he would become the oldest Booker Prize winner in history!

The winner is to be revealed November 9, 2026 in London; shortlisted authors receive £2,500, the winner £50,000.

Per Mary Beard, chair of the 2025 judging panel, "These novels range from the hilarious to the discomfiting, from the frighteningly strange to the alarmingly domestic, from the powerfully shocking to the intriguingly understated. This is writing at its best."
