"Daughters of the Sun and Moon" by Lisa See - What’s the Book About?

Set amid the vibrancy and turmoil of post-Civil War Los Angeles, See delivers a poignant and gripping tale about a forgotten piece of American history – the Chinese Massacre of 1871. She tells this story through the characters of three unforgettable women – based on real Chinese women living in Los Angeles at the time – who managed to survive and eventually thrive, despite all odds.

In 1870, Dove, the bound-footed daughter of an imperial scholar – naïve, innocent, and beautiful – journeys from China to Los Angeles to meet the older man her family has arranged for her to marry. Traveling on the same ship is Petal, the big-footed daughter of peasants, sold by her father to a Los Angeles-based gang in exchange for rice to feed their family. Upon their arrival in Los Angeles, Dove and Petal meet Moon, the wife of a traditional Chinese medicine doctor. Moon is educated, fluent in English, and beautiful, but she’s pitied and judged by their community for her limp from failed foot-binding as a child. Petal becomes a victim of s*x trafficking, and the men that control these three women’s lives – Dove’s and Moon’s husbands and Headman Sam, the leader of the Nin Yung Tong gang – work to keep them apart.

Despite these efforts, Dove, Petal, and Moon forge an indelible bond against the backdrop of intense xenophobia and anti-Chinese sentiment typical of the time and that bears familiar themes to today. Their stories culminate in the Chinese Massacre of 1871, aptly named the Night of Horrors. Brought together by destiny and bound by hardship and heartbreak, Dove, Petal, and Moon must use their resilience and bravery to endure in the face of absolute tragedy.
