Marco Rubio's visit to Athens triggered a full-blown parliamentary fight Wednesday, with Greek opposition parties accusing the government of subservience to Washington while the ruling party fired back with claims of "anti-American delirium."

The clash broke out in parliament's plenary session while Rubio was across the street at the Foreign Ministry meeting with Greek officials. SYRIZA leader Rena Dorou accused Rubio of trying to turn the Acropolis and the Pnyx into a "backdrop" for far-right views he promotes in America and Europe. She called the government's foreign policy an act of "servility" and alleged it had become a competition ground for companies seeking favor with Washington.

PASOK's Dimitris Mantzos demanded the government clarify how Athens and Washington actually understand their strategic alliance, warning that common ground between the two capitals cannot be taken for granted. He pushed for full transparency on defense cooperation and questioned whether Greece should leave the door open to further naval involvement in the Gulf, contrasting that stance with the EU's refusal to participate in the war.

Mantzos also rejected Rubio's reported framing of Greek-Turkish disputes as "sensitive issues," insisting Greece must take a clear stand against Turkish provocations and in defense of its sovereign rights. He called on Foreign Minister Kairiridis to make clear to his American counterpart that Greece is a sovereign state and does not accept third-party interference.

From the Communist Party, Thanasis Pafilis called the visit a dangerous development, drawing a parallel to Bill Clinton's visit to the Pnyx after the Yugoslavia war. He tied Greece's participation in US military planning to what he described as a contradiction with the image of a peaceful nation, and criticized cooperation between the Greek Armed Forces and the Florida National Guard.

The ruling New Democracy's parliamentary spokesman Dimitris Kairiridis shot back, accusing the opposition of "genuinely anti-American delirium." He argued that crude anti-Americanism serves Greece's adversaries, especially Turkey, and reminded SYRIZA that Alexis Tsipras himself called Trump a force for good in 2017 and referred to Benjamin Netanyahu as a friend in 2016.
