Finding out your child has Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) can feel overwhelming, but you do not have to figure it out alone.
Texas has specific programs, waivers, and school services designed to help your family. Use this step-by-step checklist to get started today:
🔹 1. SECURE MEDICAID WAIVERS (Do This First!)
Texas has long waitlists for disability waivers, so register immediately. These waivers bypass parental income limits to fund long-term services.
Action: Call 1-877-438-5658 to join the CLASS/MDCP interest lists. Contact your local LIDDA office to join the HCS/TxHmL lists.
🔹 2. ACCESS EARLY INTERVENTION (Ages 0-3)
If your child is under three, you can get professional therapy directly inside your home.
Action: Contact Texas Early Childhood Intervention (ECI) for speech, physical, and occupational therapy evaluations.
🔹 3. NAVIGATE SCHOOL SERVICES (Ages 3+)
Public schools provide free specialized education and therapy services if your child qualifies.
Action: Submit a written request for a Full and Individual Initial Evaluation (FIIE) to your local school district’s Special Education Director to build an IEP.
🔹 4. COORDINATE CLINICAL CARE
Build your child's medical care team to tackle core communication and sensory milestones.
Action: Ask your pediatrician for medical referrals for Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), Speech Therapy (SLP), and Occupational Therapy (OT). Check your insurance policy for Texas autism mandate coverage.

Routine and community are everything.
Action: Build predictable, structured visual schedules at home. Connect with local parents through the Autism Society of Texas or any Autism Support group and find vetted guides on Navigate Life Texas.
🔹 6. MANAGE FINANCIALS
Look into financial assistance programs designed for childhood developmental disabilities.
Action: If you don't have insurance coverage for ABA, look into the state-funded Children's Autism Program (ages 3-15) or check your eligibility for Supplemental Security Income (SSI).

If you need a Power of Attorney, you can get a Power of Attorney from eforms.com ( you can make the document for free if you have a 7 day free trial). Do not sign document ahead of time.
