Happy Memorial Day
Merriam-Webster defines “Grateful” as: appreciative of benefits, kindness, or help received. This weekend, millions of Americans will host gatherings with family and friends to celebrate a well-deserved three days off from having worked hard all week. However, for so many others, reminders of the family members who have tragically been lost in the service to their country will be ever-present.
Since 1775, an estimated 1,308,000 men and women have given their lives. Over time, united from all 50 states and territories around the globe, our diverse service members have fought to protect our people and our democracy.
Since 1865, Memorial Day has become the day we set aside in unity, honoring the courageous military men and women who gave their lives in service, protecting all of us and our way of life so we can enjoy our Constitutional freedoms. Differences didn’t matter when the call to duty resounded; they answered it. Fighting side by side, they trusted each other. They trusted that liberty and justice for all would continue to guide our nation as a beacon of hope for all.
As you spend the time off with your family and friends, we humbly ask that you take a moment to thank the families whose loved ones are no longer able to sit at the dinner table or toast in celebration of achievements.
Our nation has come a long way since 1775. People with no rights then - have them now. Our democracy has made progress. While we recognize we have a long way to go to perfect our union, we know we would never have made the progress that we have without those who fought for us.
We at EOPA are forever grateful.
