Stormwater wetlands are engineered to effectively treat stormwater by collecting and storing rainwater runoff, improving water quality, and providing vital habitat for wildlife. They are highly efficient at removing pollutants and offer significant aesthetic and habitat value.

๐—•๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป is a type of green infrastructure that utilizes shallow basins or landscaped depressions to store, infiltrate, and treat stormwater runoff. These systems are constructed by excavating a basin and backfilling it with well-draining, engineered soil media. Native vegetation, grasses, or sod are then planted in the basins to help support pollutant removal, enhance habitat, mitigate heat island effects, and improve water quality. Importantly, plant health and density are also related to the overall aesthetic value of these systems, making them a visually pleasing addition to any landscape.

Low-impact development strategies and green infrastructure tools protect, mimic, and restore the natural water cycle. They decrease the sediment, nutrients, temperature, pathogens, and other sources of pollution entering our water. They also manage the quantity of runoff, promoting infiltration and reducing flooding.

On Monday, March 11th, a team from SMM landscape architects led a community design charette at Reidsville City Hall. The workshop was held as part of the Community Technical Assistance process currently underway to help Reidsville apply for federal funding to address flooding and improve resilience. We are grateful to everyone who showed up to share their voices!

Maggie Van Cantfort, Watershed Specialist with the Altamaha Riverkeeper, hosted a workshop on October 29th to train Tattnall County residents in water quality monitoring protocol. Water quality is important for the well-being of people and wildlife and is a key concern for flooding and water management. Many of Georgiaโ€™s streams are unfortunately included in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agencyโ€™s list of impaired waterways, meaning the water quality fails to meet basic standards for safety. By learning to conduct water quality monitoring, community members can gather information that helps us understand whatโ€™s happening with local resources. The goal is to have the tools and knowledge to take care of the local environment that supports our communities.

Thanks to everyone who attended the workshop! Our hope is to collectively continue to build community engagement and increase participation in future events.

Over two days in early October, the project team visited Reidsville and Collins in order to conduct additional site analysis and to present two public events to residents. On Sunday October 8th, ecological engineering firm Biohabitats led a community nature walk to discuss the underlying causes of flooding and potential nature-based solutions for water management. The following day, the team hosted Reidsville and Collins residents for a catered dinner and community listening session, aimed at better understanding the concerns and needs of the community.

The team is grateful to the folks who showed up to the listening session ready to engage and share their local expertise and experience. The information gathered will help inform the direction of the project from here on out and will be incorporated into a Regenerative Landscape Plan which will help in securing additional grant funding to implement solutions.
