May 2026 Mental Health Awareness:
Making connections. Feeling capable and confident. Developing a sense of responsibility and empathy for others. These are common strategies for good mental health.

You begin by getting out and being active. Community gardening, volunteering or a yoga group. Activities that can help get you out there. Here’s a few options for getting active physically and mentally.

May 2026 is Mental Health Awareness Month. The focus is on what a "good" day means to individuals and communities, promoting collective support to manage mental health.

The month emphasizes that mental health is as important as physical health, aiming to increase access to care and ensure everyone has the tools to thrive.

A big Thank You to the Tessenderlo Kerley Learning Center staff in Dinuba. In early February, they enabled our CLG community gardeners to plant seeds for tomatoes, chilies, cucumbers and other varieties of vegetables. The gardeners used the center’s flats and soil, and then placed the flats in their greenhouse. There the seeds could germinate in a warmer environment. Center staff did a wonderful job keeping the seeds watered.

At the beginning of March, CLG community gardeners went to the greenhouse to check on the plants. It was nice to see that they were growing quickly. The gardeners also separated the clusters to give the individual seedlings a chance to thrive. Also during this time, the gardeners cleared w**ds from the garden beds and mixed in manure. A planting mixture would be added during the planting.

On March 21, the seedlings were transferred to the Garden for planting. The wonderful volunteers that day did a great job finishing the soil and planting the seedlings. Onions and garlic were also planted next to the seedlings. The young plants were covered to protect them from being eaten by insects and other pests.

It takes a lot of effort to grow vegetables. Preparing the soil. Planting the seeds and later separating the seedlings to get more plants. Of course, having the soil, the right tools, a Garden area, and access to a greenhouse helps.

What helps even more is the people who volunteer to make this happen. Their hands. Their initiative. Their compassion and desire to engage with others for a purpose. This is what makes our Community Garden efforts worthwhile and rewarding. We can hardly wait for the harvest.

A big thank you to the Reedley Lions club members, 4-H club members, Garden members, and volunteers that showed on Saturday, March 21st. We started early with coffee and refreshments, but we were there to work!

Some adults and children helped plant bulb and seedling plants in the community plots. For some of the children, it was a first time learning experience. They enjoyed working in the garden soil.

The Lions members brought strength and determination to dig out a new planting area for their donated citrus trees. The planting area requires holes to be dug and compost to be mixed in. These trees will be planted on April 7th at the Lions meeting at the Garden.

Finally, the volunteers stamina and determination resulted in the w**d clearing of the herb garden and fruit trees. The area is looking so much better. The herbs will grow much nicer and new ones can be planted.

It was certainly a wonderful morning to be out in the Garden. Working together for a purpose and to build community made it a great day
