Wolves scent roll—rubbing their neck, shoulders, and body into strong or unusual odors—primarily to communicate information back to their pack, mask their own scent, and mark territory.
Why Wolves Scent Roll
• Pack Communication and "News" Delivery: When a wolf finds an interesting smell (such as a carcass, s**t, or a novel chemical scent), rolling in it coats their fur. When they return to the pack, other members intensely sniff the scented wolf. Researchers have observed pack members using that transferred scent to navigate directly back to the original discovery site, like a food source.
• Scent Camouflage: A long-standing theory is that coating themselves in environmental or pungent odors helps disguise their natural canine scent. This makes it harder for alert prey to detect them approaching during a hunt.
• Territorial Marking: By rubbing their bodies and leaving chemical residues in specific locations, wolves contribute to marking the boundaries and presence of their pack, supplementing other methods like raised-leg urination.
• Curiosity and the Joy of Stinky Things: Wolves have been documented rolling in both foul and pleasant smells (such as mint, perfumes, and food waste). This suggests the physical act is driven by an intense sensory attraction to strong or unfamiliar environmental novelties.

Why do gray wolves howl at the moon?
We hate to burst your bubble, but it is a myth that wolves howl at the moon!

Howling may be heard at night, but it is not a behavior directed at the moon. Instead, it is used as a social rally call, a hail to hunt or as a territorial expression. Did you know that individuals have different howls that can be heard by other wolves 6-7 mile away?

A howl can even help a lost wolf find its way home. A wolf separated from its pack uses a “lonesome howl” — a shortened call that rises in pitch. If answered, the wolf then responds with deep, even howls to inform the pack of its location.
