Introducing Kevin Shinnick , one of our motivational speakers at the SOUTH BAY SERIES SPEAKERS # 2 sponsored by Dive N' Surf.
Kevin was intensely scared of the deep end of the pool until he was 5 years old. But since then there's rarely been a day he hasn’t been in the water. After graduating from LMU, Kevin raced in a number of triathlons, and, after completing his second Ironman distance race, he started focusing on marathon ocean swims. He’s one of only 140 American swimmers who have completed the Triple Crown of Ocean Swimming -- the English Channel, the Catalina Channel, and the circumnavigation around Manhattan in New York. Kevin also found a new passion recently as a kayak supporter on the Catalina Channel swims and has escorted several successful solo and relay swims over the past two summers.
The ocean is his passion and it’s safe to say he’s no longer scared of the deep end!

Introducing Carly Miller one of our motivational speakers at the SOUTH BAY SERIES SPEAKERS # 2 sponsored by Dive N' Surf.

Carly Miller is a marathon swimmer and swim coach living in Los Angeles.
Growing up, Carly swam on local age group and high school teams back on the east coast. Her high school swim coach was a big positive influence on her and one of the reasons why she would eventually transition into swim coaching.
Carly is the head coach of the open water program for West Hollywood Aquatics (masters). She is the Head Varsity & JV Swim Coach at Notre Dame Academy in Culver City. She also runs a private coaching business where she works with children and adults.
Carly started to swim again in 2015 after about 20 years of staying mostly on dry land. in 2018, she swam 12.2 miles in the Santa Barbara Channel from Anacapa to Oxnard. In 2019, she swam the width of Lake Tahoe and the Catalina Channel. And in 2020, she trained through the pandemic closures to complete the length of Lake Tahoe and swims around Manhattan and Coronado. That year, she became the 18th person to complete the California Triple Crown, a feat which she dedicated to her mother Emily, who lost her battle with cancer in 2005. In 2021, Carly became the 6th person to ever swim the 27-mile width of Santa Monica Bay from Point Dume in Malibu to Rocky Point in Palos Verdes.
From 2018 - 2021, Carly used her swims to raise more than $25,000 for the non-profit organization FORCE. In 2022, she planned a 3-day, 36-mile coastline swim off Santa Monica Bay and raised nearly $17,000 for Heal the Bay. Carly hopes to inspiring another generation of young swimmers.

Introducing Teri Jones one of our motivational speakers at the 2023 #1 South Bay Series Speakers sponsored by Dive N' Surf
From Teri:
I grew up here in the south bay my entire life, 54 years in the same home in Hermosa Beach. I work in the Telecom industry and have for 47 years, working with television and film studios helping them bring live events into your homes. Did you watch the Super Bowl?
My passions outside of work are number 1, volunteering in dog rescue to save as many homeless pups as I can. Next, is dabbling in the sport of triathlon.
Triathlon came about in a series of events over time. Since I was never an athlete, it started by volunteering with the City of Los Angeles Marathon back in 1986. I continued with the race for 20 years.
My first introduction to anything mentionable was running a marathon in 1999 (at the age of 45) to support AIDS Project Los Angeles, honoring a friend’s brother that succumbed to the disease. I would participate in another three marathons supporting the same cause, raising nearly $50,000. From there, I took up cycling to raise awareness of juvenile arthritis, raising money for the Arthritis Foundation.
I found a love for cycling. Between 2003 and 2011, I participated 7 times in AF’s annual ride from San Francisco and Los Angeles, 525 miles in 8 days. Having so many people donate 10’s of thousands of dollars to both efforts really boosted my confidence.
I’m still not a great swimmer but I manage to get it done. I participated in a few Olympic distance triathlons starting in 2010. From there I did an Ironman 70.3 race.
Many people encouraged me to move up to the full Ironman distance. In 2014, at the age of 60, I would cross the finish line of my 1st Ironman.
To date, I’ve completed approximately 15 Ironman 70.3 races and 4 full Ironman races.
More rewarding than that, in the last 10 years, I’ve fostered and placed approximately 500 puppies/dogs at risk in our local shelters.

Some of his Swims include SCAR twice, English Channel, Catalina Channel twice, other various relays, and other pioneering solo swims among the other CA Channel Islands and along the CA coast, and many other places such as Hawai’i, San Francisco, Florida, New York, Mexico, Italy, England.
