A perfect day and a trash-conscious crew of 24 that want to keep Raton clean!!

Even picking up our town is an activity that builds better relationships. We had fun and got acquainted new friends.

And what about this? A person considering a life here with a new job or a place to retire. The first appearance our community presents plays a role in whether that maybe life-long or life-enhancing relationship will get a chance.

Many thanks to all who partnered in this effort. Gratitude goes out to Super Save, KRTN, City of Raton, NM State Police, and Shayne Young!

Thank you, Jason Phillips, for stopping by before we started.

Looks like perfect weather tomorrow! Hope to see you there!

Last week Alisha Morphew, the new director of Alternatives to Violence, spoke about services and what things to look and listen for if you suspect someone might be a victim or in a difficult relationship or situation. Thanks, Alisha!

What a blast! Ten of us volunteered yesterday to help pack meals at the Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron. We worked for a couple hours on assembly lines alongside seasonal employees and two volunteers from Duluth, MN. Very fun!

After lunch we had a tour of the Villa Philmonte. So much history. It’s a story of how far great wealth combined with generosity can go. In fact there was a conscious decision by Waite and Genevieve Phillips at one point to give away one half of all they had.

It is worth the drive there to get a free tour of the villa to hear the whole story. Call first for a reservation. You don’t have to be a Scout to stay there and have your own adventures. Reserve a room and enjoy the trails, the food, the people.

Some visited the National Scout Museum after all that.

Rotary will do this again! Thank you to Vice President and General Manager Andrea Watson for inviting Raton Rotary!

Twelve volunteers cleaned up part of 1st Street and Ripley Park the morning before the Cinco de Mayo festival on Saturday, May 2nd. Some also pulled weeds and trimmed bushes near the Old Pass Gallery and area where Amtrak passengers arrive and depart.

There’s always more to do but the area looks better by about 20 hours of volunteer time and fun with people of like minds who want Raton to give a tidy impression to locals and visitors.

Please watch for the info about the Saturday, May 30th community-wide clean-up.

In the past two weeks, guest speakers Steve Aguirre and Frank Cimino gripped our attention. Steve has spent 30 years actively supporting and initiating educational programs via the High Plains Regional Education Cooperative. The HPREC has touched students at every level often without taking much credit for the hard work involved.

Frank Cimino from Phil Long Ford of Raton told about his father and uncle who started the dealership with vision and a lot of entrepreneurial drive. A family business. Frank went to college for a degree in political science but surprisingly wound up discovering his passion for the Raton family business.

Time often flies by with such interesting speakers who care about Raton and the work they do. Both had so many stories to tell. If you’d like to be inspired by many local leaders, come to a Tuesday meeting at K-Bob’s, noon to 1:00. You’re invited.
