Ninth Amendment — Rights Beyond the Written Page

The Ninth Amendment is a reminder of humility.
The Founders understood that no document—no matter how carefully written—could ever capture every human right. By including the Ninth Amendment, they acknowledged that liberty exists beyond what can be enumerated.

It reflects a deep trust in the idea that freedom is lived, not merely defined.

At Project Appleseed, we honor that tradition by passing on knowledge, skills, and history—because liberty endures through people, not paper alone.

This week in history: The Battle of Harlem Heights

On the morning of September 16, 1776, General George Washington commenced drafting a letter to John Hancock, President of Congress. He wrote, "We are now encamped with the main body of the army on the Heights of Harlem, where I should hope the enemy would meet with a defeat in case of an attack." This strategic positioning followed the Continental Army's retreat to northern Manhattan after the significant loss at the Battle of Long Island in August.

Before Washington could complete his correspondence, an urgent alarm resonated throughout the camp.

The complete text of Washington's letter to John Hancock can be accessed through the National Archives at https://founders.archives.gov/documents/Washington/03-06-02-0251

After the Battle of Harlem Heights on September 16, 1776, General George Washington was disappointed that his men failed to execute his orders, but he had won his first battlefield victory of the war.

The final shirts for 2026 have arrived! 🎉 We're excited to share that Project Appleseed marksmanship clinics for the rest of 2026 will receive these special shirts, commemorating General Washington and his battered army crossing the icy Delaware River on Christmas Eve, 1776. These shirts are available while supplies last!

As we reflect on this historic moment, let's remember the inspiring words of General Washington after their victory at the Battle of Trenton.

On December 31, 1776, he said to them, "My brave fellows, you have done all I asked you to do, and more than can be reasonably expected; but your country is at stake, your wives, your houses and all that you hold dear. You have worn yourselves out with fatigues and hardships, but we know not how to spare you. If you will consent to stay one month longer, you will render that service to the cause of liberty, and to your country, which you probably can never do under any other circumstances."

As we continue to celebrate our nation’s 250th birthday all year long, help us honor the sacrifices made by the Founding Generation to secure our freedom. We invite you to join us for a Project Appleseed R***e or Pistol marksmanship clinic! You'll hear fascinating stories from our dedicated volunteers about the early days of the American Revolutionary War and learn the essential skills of marksmanship from our talented instructors across the nation.

We can’t wait to see you on the line! 😊 Visit us at www.appleseedinfo.org/schedulemap/ to find a class near you.

Eighth Amendment: Proportion and Humanity

The Eighth Amendment insists that punishment must not be cruel or excessive.
It reflects a belief that liberty must always be paired with humanity.

Appleseed teaches respect—toward history, toward others, and toward the responsibilities that come with freedom.

A just society measures its strength by its restraint.
