For many families living with type 1 diabetes, camp is the first place they feel seen, validated and supported. This feeling of connection can turn a family’s diagnosis from a struggle into a thriving life, and this wouldn’t be possible without the generosity of our sponsors like REV Federal Credit Union. “Today I learned that I don’t have to do this alone.” - C2C Coastal Camper

With our final Camp to Community event for 2026 in the books, we want to reflect on all the overwhelming PMA, support and community we’ve seen. Our families showed up despite the cloudy weather, and let down their guards to be silly, try new experiences, sing at the top of their lungs (“I’m gonna be a pizza man!”), share their highs and lows of T1D, and lean on each other.

We at The DFC have so much gratitude for each and every person who came together to make such a memorable day– Thank you to all of our families, volunteers, sponsors, and YMCA Camp Kirkwood for allowing us to wrap up our 2026 journey across NC with utmost positivity. We hope to see all of our families again at another event, but in the meantime, stay involved by visiting our website or reaching out to us to see how you can get involved.

We at The DFC are always so impressed and amazed at the PMA families' show at our events, and Camp to Community Coastal was no exception! Here are some ways our campers and caregivers showed PMA:

- Conquering the zipline
- Doing a site change on their own for the first time! 🙌
- Trusting our counselors and Medical staff to care for their child and not checking BG readings while at the event!
- Taking the leap to find a community that supports them 💙

A day filled with PMA, camp games, and… rubber ducks??

We had a blast at our Camp to Community outside Wilmington, NC yesterday, but we couldn’t have made it happen without our amazing sponsors like Novant Health!

By partnering with The DFC in our Camp to Community in Watha, Novant has allowed for a day of T1D support, resources, connection, and yes, rubber ducks, to positively transform the lives of families living with type 1 diabetes.

Thank you for your support and generosity as we accomplish our mission to turn the isolation of a T1D diagnosis into a family that thrives through the power of community.

To all the amazing families who took the leap to make our Camp to Community event in the High Country the best day ever, THANK YOU wholeheartedly!

We loved watching the community come together– faces new and old, counselor or camper, medical staff or expert panelist, one thing’s for sure: everyone had a blast and left with a community to lean on!

We hope to see all of you at future events like our family retreat!
