Trenton FMBA Local 6 is helping put fire prevention directly into the homes of Trenton residents.

Through a partnership between the Trenton Fire Department and the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs, 300 new 10-year lithium-battery smoke alarms will be installed in homes across the city at no cost to residents. Trenton firefighters will also use these visits to provide fire-safety education and identify potential hazards in the home.

NJ FMBA Vice President and Trenton Battalion Chief Kevin Beyrouty emphasized the importance of early warning, both for residents trying to escape and for firefighters responding to the emergency.

Proud to see the members of Trenton FMBA Local 6 continuing to serve their community not only on the fireground, but through prevention, education, and outreach that can save lives before the alarm ever comes in.

Another strong training opportunity delivered by the NJ FMBA Education & Training Committee.

On October 3, firefighters from across New Jersey attended From Size Up to Overhaul: Thermal Imaging for Fireground Operations, hosted by the Ewing Fire Department.

The class covered thermal imaging fundamentals, application modes, camera limitations, and practical fireground use, giving members a better understanding of how to read and apply thermal images during real operations.

Participants then put that knowledge to work during live fire demonstrations using the Palmer dollhouse, reinforcing how thermal imaging can support decision-making from initial size-up through overhaul.

Thank you to the Ewing Fire Department for hosting and supporting another quality training opportunity for NJ FMBA members.

Member Spotlight: John Fierro, FMBA President Local 20 & 20A

After a 17-year break from running, newly promoted Montclair Fire Department Battalion Chief John Fierro took on the 2026 Chicago Marathon on October 11 at 55 years old.

John ran in support of Ignite the Spirit of Chicago, a foundation that supports Chicago firefighters and their families during times of need.

His journey back to running started with family. After watching his daughter Hannah and son Jake train for the Chicago Half Marathon, John was inspired to start running again. Last September, he completed his first half marathon alongside them. That experience, and the excitement surrounding the Chicago Marathon, pushed him to take the next step.

On October 11, John and Hannah took on the Chicago Marathon together, turning what started as a fitness goal into a journey built around family, health, perseverance, and gratitude.

John credits his wife Jennifer, his children Hannah, Jake, Jason and Luke, his extended family, and his brothers and sisters at the Montclair Fire Department for their support along the way. He also gives special thanks to his former crews on Groups 4 and 3 for their friendship and brotherhood throughout the journey.

For John, the message is simple: age and circumstances do not have to define what you can accomplish. Commitment, perseverance, and refusing to give up can take you further than you imagined.

A huge congratulations to longtime NJ FMBA member and past Executive Vice President Wayne Wolk!

Wayne was unanimously approved today by the New Jersey Senate Judiciary Committee following his appointment by the Governor to serve as Director of the New Jersey Division of Fire Safety.

This is a major moment for Wayne, the NJ FMBA, and the entire New Jersey fire service.

Wayne has spent years serving firefighters, representing our members, and standing up for the profession, including his time as Executive Vice President of the NJ FMBA. To now see one of our own step into this leadership role is something we are incredibly proud of.

Congratulations, Wayne. You earned this moment, and we know you will continue to serve New Jersey’s fire service with the same commitment and leadership you have shown throughout your career.

Help us congratulate Wayne on this well-deserved achievement!

Another strong training night from the NJ FMBA Education & Training Committee!

On October 1, firefighters from across New Jersey came together at the Union County Fire Academy for live fire thermal imaging training sponsored by the NJ FMBA.

The class combined classroom instruction with practical training under live fire conditions, giving members the opportunity to work through camera modes, real-world applications, thermal imaging limitations, and image interpretation in realistic conditions.

The goal was simple: build confidence with the equipment before it matters most.

Thank you to the Union County Fire Academy instructors and everyone who participated for making the class a success!

Vincent Siracusa is running in Block #1 for the PFRSNJ Retiree Representative position.

He has received the support of the NJ State PBA, Retired Officers PBA Local 600, Retired Firefighters FMBA Local 500, and the NJ State Police & Firemen’s Association.

Siracusa has spent years standing up for police and fire members, and now he is asking retirees for the opportunity to continue that work on the PFRSNJ Board.

Ballots are due November 12, 2026.

Eligible retirees should review the candidates and make sure their ballot is submitted on time.
