Twist Out Cancer is a global community that provides social and emotional support to those touched by cancer. Thus: Twist Out Cancer was born.

Twist Out Cancer (TOC) was built on the belief that when you share, the world opens up. At the age of 29, Jenna Benn Shersher was diagnosed with grey zone lymphoma—a rare form of cancer which affects less than 300 people in the United States. Midway through treatment, Jenna, a dancer at heart, was isolated due to her compromised immune system. Alone and longing for the days when she could dance freely, she created an online video of herself doing the twist. She asked her friends to join her on her virtual dance floor, and within days, Jenna’s challenge was met by hundreds of videos of thousands of people dancing around the world. She no longer felt alone but instead connected to and supported by a community of twisters. When Jenna completed treatment she knew that she wanted to give back in a meaningful way. She recognized the power of sharing and the importance of creating a support community that caters to the psychosocial needs of those affected by cancer.

🍸 MEET THE MAN BEHIND THE VERMOUTH! 🍸

We’re thrilled to have our good friend Tim Kweeder of Fell to Earth bringing his own handcrafted vermouth and a cocktail created especially for our Brushes With Cancer celebration!

Tim is doing what he does best—creating something thoughtful, local, and delicious—and we’re so lucky to have him pouring for our community. Fell to Earth is Philadelphia’s first vermouthery, making Pennsylvania vermouth and herbal liqueurs with local w**e and botanicals.

And honestly? We can’t wait to see (and taste!) what he’s mixing up. 🍸

Join us for our October Monthly Twistshop, partnered with LUNGevity!

This month, we're teaming up with LUNGevity, the nation's leading lung cancer organization, dedicated to improving quality of life and survivorship for everyone touched by the disease. Their commitment to comprehensive resources and health equity drives their vision of a world where no one dies of lung cancer.

This session, "Every Breath Forward," will be led by Twist Out Cancer facilitator and art therapist Callie Ludwig. Inspired by the Every Breath Forward art installations, participants will create a symbolic Hope Flag using colors, symbols, words, and imagery to explore personal sources of hope, resilience, and community, while honoring their own strength and healing.

In Loving Memory of Zachary Coil 🤍

Our hearts are heavy as we mourn the loss of Zachary Coil, a beloved member of the Twist Out Cancer community and an Inspiration in last year’s Philadelphia Brushes with Cancer program.

Zach courageously shared his story and his experience living with glioblastoma, allowing an artist to listen, connect, and ultimately transform his journey into a work of art. In doing so, Zach gave all of us the gift of knowing him, witnessing his story, and carrying a piece of it forward.

Zach was in the prime of his life. His death is a painful reminder of how profoundly cancer can alter the course of a life and impact an entire community of people who love them.

We are deeply grateful that Zach chose to share a part of himself with Brushes with Cancer. His story, his artwork, and the connections he created will remain part of the fabric of our community.

We are holding Zach’s family, friends, artist, and all who loved him close to our hearts.

May his memory be a blessing. 🤍

Thank you to Northwestern Medicine for inviting Twist Out Cancer to share art therapy with your community of donors!

On Monday, August 17th, art therapist and Twistshop Director, Jacqueline Carmody, attended Northwestern Medicine’s Top Donor Luncheon. At the event, participants were invited to create artwork from chosen prompts and proudly display their work on mini easels. What transpired what a lovely afternoon of creating, storytelling, laughter, and connection.

We are so grateful for this opportunity!

Applications are open for Brushes with Cancer Chicago 2027! 🎨

Over six months, each artist is paired with an Inspiration (someone touched by cancer) to get to know their story and turn it into an original work of art. The program ends with an exhibition and celebration in Chicago, where every piece and every pairing is honored by our community.

Inspirations include thrivers, survivors, previvors, and caregivers.

📍 You do NOT need to live in Chicago to apply. Our participants join from across the country and around the world.
