Bring your and to our community decks from 6:30-7:30pm in the outdoor amphitheater before Bachateame Poet takes the stage.

We are grateful to all our who have supported the development of our Community Space and Radio Station over the past two years and are delighted to share that the Ford Foundation shares your enthusiasm!

We are the recipients of a 2026 Good Neighbor Committee Grant in the area of Arts and Culture!

Their support will go a long way in supporting the development of LH Radio, Queens’ only community radio and the first of its kind to be housed in the MTA subway system.

An important dimension of our work around creative ‘latinidades,’ is our ongoing partnership with Smithsonian Folkways where we edit videos for the Tradiciones Series. These national level partnerships connect our hyper local work with sister conversations across the country.

We are pleased to announce the release of two new mini-docs about the California-based Herrera family whose work around son jarocho, son huasteco and other genres has had. A lasting impact on the way Mexican music is performed in the United States.

In “The Herrera Family in Oxnard: Legacies and Lessons from Conjunto Huayapan,” Fermín Herrera, the son of Mexican farmworkers in the 1950s, discusses how his lifetime musical passion—nurtured by family tradition, the Chicano Civil Rights Movement, and Indigenous Aztec ethics embedded in the Classic Nahuatl language—sparked a regional resurgence of Veracruz son jarocho music and spotlight performances with Los Lobos, Linda Ronstadt, and other luminaries.

This past weekend our mean green dancing machine, Los Herederos, made her debut in the Library of Congress ⚡️

Since the Sonicycle’s creation in early 2017, we have been developing, testing and refining a unique set of methodologies for community documentation and archiving at the neighborhood level. We are honored that this work has gained national attention and been used to create a specialized collection about Jackson Heights with the American Folklife Center among other important contributions.

On September 19, 2026 the Sonicycle proudly rolled up to the Thomas Jefferson Building in Washington, DC and brought to life a diverse array of archival materials curated by the Library’s staff and local residents. Beyond the demonstrating a musical approach to ethnographic documentation and historical research, our Creative Team also had the chance to share more about our organizational story and mission with the general public and broadcast live on LH Radio.

We would like to give a heartfelt thanks to all the staff at the American Folklife Center and the Library of Congress for your superior hosting and support. We were honored by the invitation and value our ongoing partnership.

And too our staff (Naomi Sturm, Mauricio Bayona, Willie Saurio, Alejandro Navarro R, Camilo Correa Sounds, Marcela Artunduaga, Daltin Danser) without whom none of this would be possible, we salute you and thank you for your service to inheriting culture in the digital age.

Who would have thought nearly a decade ago that our scrappy mobile invention would end up on a national stage? Only a set of dreamers, and that is what we are 🎶🌈

Celebrating 50 Years of the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress with the Sonicycle in Washington, D.C.

Did you know that on January 2, 1976, President Gerald Ford signed Public Law 94-201, The American Folklife Preservation Act, that created the American Folklife Center and placed it at the Library of Congress? For 50 years the Center has operated with a mandate to “preserve, support, revitalize, and disseminate” American folklife, and for 50 years we have all benefited from a home and an archive of ‘the people’s culture’ at the federal level.

Los Herederos is on our way to the nation’s capital to present Los Herederos as an exemplary model for sounding, documenting and archiving community and culture as part of the Center’s Anniversary programming. We are honored to be recognized in this way for the research methodologies we have worked so hard to hone over the years. We are also grateful to the American Folklife Center for supporting our work.

Join us on Saturday September 19th from 10:30AM- 3:30PM in the Thomas Jefferson Building - (registration link in bio) for our pop-up exhibition featuring our mean green dancing machine in concert with local selectors and collectors helping to sound the Library’s own collections. We will be live on LH Radio and sharing stories from the vault nationwide.

Los Herederos is back at Diversity Plaza and this time accompanied by City Lore’s POEMobile for an evening of everything from local hip hop to traditional sung Bangladeshi poetry. These two mobile attractions provide a singular and dynamic platform for emerging poets, musicians and cultural traditions that are a testament to the neighborhood as a place of cultures in contact.

Los Herederos is joining…

The People’s Poetry Gathering with its Poetry on Wheels series!

Produced as a partnership with City Lore and Bowery Poetry Club and sponsored by the 2026 Smithsonian Folklife “Festival of Festivals,” the Sonicycle along with City Lore’s POEMobile will galvanize their mobile capabilities to travel to Brooklyn (JouvayFest) Queens and the Bronx (Bronx Music Hall) to project poems on buildings and walls, accompanied by live poetry readings and curated vinyl sets. As always, community members are encouraged to bring their favorite LPs for inclusion in the programs, which promise to be a true testament of New York City people and their expressive culture.
