Los Herederos

Los Herederos Non-Profit Organization Dedicated to Folk Art Media and Digital Content. "Inheriting Culture in the Digital Age"

Los Herederos/The Inheritors (LH) is a grassroots media folk arts organization dedicated to understanding the experience of inheriting culture in the digital age. We engage in research-based documentation for public consumption to produce projects, programs & services that address the realities of local culture, evolving communities, & an increasingly multilayered immigrant experience. We believe

in the power of transmedia storytelling to educate & encourage a more culturally aware, equitable & sustainable society. Central to our creative strategy is our interdisciplinary approach to ethnography, which seeks to connect local traditions with global issues. Working at the nexus of socially-engaged public art, public interest folklife & cultural sustainability work, we utilize responsive methodologies to:

Provide free access to educational media/digital collections on the subjects of local culture & folk arts practice

Lift the profiles of creatives in our midst & create platforms/spaces for our communities via new technologies

Engage & empower local people through collaborative community-centered documentation & autoethnography

Develop unique/holistic folklife-derived economic development & mutual aid projects

On view in the Los Herederos Community Space doorway is “El sueño,” a unique 28” x 18” x 18”subway miniature by local artisan Robert Saldarriaga.

“El Sueño” explores the blurred boundary between rest and ambition, that point where the desire to achieve something greater, transforms into insomnia. It is an endless and, at times, involuntary journey, driven by the need to find meaning amidst exhaustion.

Saldarriaga Robert Saldarriaga pays homage to those who rise each day, regardless of the weight of their weariness, to continue pursuing their dreams, even when those dreams seem to slip further away with each awakening.

❄️ 🧣 Winter window displays did you say?
The Los Herederos Community Space is pleased to feature new site specific installations by local artists in our windows for the community.

📽️🎨 With its official opening this Friday November 21, be sure to come check out “You Were Here,” a Video Art Installation by Nitin Mukul supported by a 2025 NYFA / Queens Art Fund New Works Grant.

“You Were Here” is a 16 minute durational painting video filmed at 1:30pm on April 30, 2025, with an outside temperature of 73 degrees Fahrenheit, in Jackson Heights , NY. It speaks to at-risk elements in our surroundings and society that have already or are gradually disappearing from view due to climate change, anti-immigrant raids and policies and the pandemic. In addition to the painted elements that are the core of Mukul’s durational painting technique, all footage was filmed in Jackson Heights. It opens with subway riders disappearing from view as they descend the stairs underground and later bumblebees pollinating by vibrating their bodies to shake pollen loose from flowers. These bees face extinction due to habitat loss, pesticides, and climate change. An aerial image of Jackson Heights shared with the artist weeks ago by an astronaut currently on board the International Space Station also appears as a metaphor for our place in the universe and how all our actions have an impact.

✨Continuing in our commitment to dynamic , Los Herederos has been incubating a new community theater initiative led by .artunduaga, a Queens based theater artist, educator and LH Creative Team member.

📢 is an interdisciplinary art project that merges photography, multimedia storytelling, theater forms and invites participants to create characters and fiction stories from documenting our communities in our everyday world. This iteration of the project took place in the Jackson Heights–Roosevelt Avenue/74th Street Subway Station and will have its debut via our community space later this week.

A big congrats to the actors and dramaturges .artunduaga, and who following an intensive period of fieldwork, deep listening, and documentation, have crafted three unique monologues in English, Spanish and Urdu.

Learn more about this exciting new project and listen to monologues this Wednesday September 24th at 4pm on 🎧📻

Reality Meets Fiction is made possible via an Individual Artist Grant from with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature. Many thanks to the project’s fiscal sponsor , our production staff for the initiative and , and to our Queens communities and commuters for their invaluable participation.

At Los Herederos, education is baked deeply into all aspects of our work. We see storytelling as pedagogy. To inherit culture in the digital age is to honor tradition while embracing innovation, to archive the past while imagining futures, and to make learning a process of shared transformation. As a community-based organization, much of our work is responsive—and as such, we are often “in the doing” rather than in the writing. To contribute to this journal is to create space for reflection, a way of putting down on paper the lessons that emerge from the lived complexities of cultural documentation.

Many thanks to Co-Editors and for giving the opportunity to contribute our perspectives and platform the importance of documentation, archives, and new technologies for learning today. We remain indebted and grateful to this edition’s advisory committee, the editorial board and all the amazing authors who contributed their work and insights via multimedia publications.

In honor of the 1-Year Anniversary of our Community Space and Radio Station, we are pleased to be featured on ‘Making it Here,’ the official podcast of Epicenter NYC.

Listen to our Executive Director, Naomi Sturm discuss the organization’s early days, the real life hustle of building an organization from scratch in NYC, and how we ended up in the 74th street - Roosevelt Ave - Jackson Heights station making waves with radio from one of the most diverse neighborhoods on earth.

It’s been just about a year since a once-empty storefront in the 74th Street Roosevelt Avenue subway station in Jackson Heights, became a space for retelling stories. It now houses Los Herederos, a nonprofit blending radio, archives, and public programs to document communities across Queens. The i...

La familia creativa de y está ampliando 🎨🖌️🎶💜.

Since our launch of LH Radio in 2024, the station’s visual identity and marketing materials have been expertly created by one of our regular design collaborators .co. You may know Juan’s work from other organizational initiatives such as Documenting as Resistance and our events. We are deeply indebted to Juan and his talent and support of our community radio and will continue to work on other forthcoming projects ✨

Starting in August 2025, we are pleased to welcome .pinshop to the team who will takeover the LH Radio design work. Gio is the mastermind behind our famous LH pins and has been a long time supporter of the organization as well.

Gio and Juan will work together in the transition and we look forward to this new era of LH Radio branding.

Thanks and gracias to all 🙏🏾
