In the Project Read Spelling Bee, teams can buy lifelines like "buy a letter", "use your phone", and "double your points" to create little advantages that can make a big difference. And some teams have figured out the the more lifelines you have, the better your odds.

But for Project Read students, a lifeline can be something much bigger: a tutor, a new skill, extra practice, or someone who believes in them.

This Spelling Bee your support helps provide real-life lifelines that help adults read their goals. Every lifeline counts.

Thank you to Bonneville Bank for helping provide real-life lifelines to adult learners in our community and reminding us that sometimes, having a few extra advantages really does pay off.

September is National Literacy Month and we think that’s worth talking about.

All month long, we’ll be highlighting the people, moments, and everyday wins that show why literacy matters. Follow along, share with a friend, and see literacy in action.

Because literacy isn’t just about reading. It’s about having more choices, more confidence, and more opportunities in everyday life.

What did literacy help you accomplish today? 🧮

Maybe it helped you decide whether it was cheaper to make lunch at home or grab something on the go.

That’s everyday numeracy—using math skills to compare costs, make informed choices, and manage your money.

In Project Read’s math classes, students practice skills like comparing prices, budgeting, calculating costs, and making everyday financial decisions.

Because math literacy isn’t just about numbers on a page. It’s about using those numbers in real life.

Building confidence.
Opening doors to new opportunities.
Showing up for your community.

Yep. It’s kind of chic.

At Project Read, our volunteers help adults build the literacy, numeracy, and digital skills they need to feel more confident in everyday life.

Literacy struggles don’t always look the way we expect. Many adults have learned to navigate work, family, and everyday life while quietly working around reading and learning challenges.

At Project Read, we believe it’s never too late to build stronger literacy skills and everyone deserves the chance to learn.

Help us open doors through literacy. Volunteer, donate, or share our work to help more Utah adults move forward.

When you’re reading something new, don’t worry about getting through it as fast as possible.

Pause after a sentence or paragraph and ask yourself: “What did that just say?”

Put it into your own words, even if they’re simple. This helps you understand, remember, and make sense of what you read.

At Project Read, our tutors use strategies like this to help adults build stronger reading skills for work, school, family, and everyday life.

Want to strengthen your literacy skills? We can help. 💙 Learn more about Project Read and get started today!

Bring your team to the Bee!

Literacy opens doors—to better jobs, more opportunities, greater confidence, and a stronger future.

For 20 years, the Project Read Spelling Bee has brought our community together to have fun, compete, and raise funds that help adults build the reading, math, writing, and digital skills they need to thrive.

We’re inviting companies and teams across our community to join the fun and make an impact. Your team gets an afternoon of friendly competition, while your participation helps provide life-changing literacy services to adults right here in Utah.

Through a budgeting lesson, Diego* identified where his money was going, made a spending plan, and discovered a simple strategy he could use right away: needs first, wants second.

This is what literacy looks like in everyday life: learning skills that help you make choices, reach goals, and build a brighter future.
