Financial literacy makes good cents!💰

Shaquille O'Neal signed a $50 million contract and then walked into a bank to buy a house. The lender told him he couldn't be approved.

The reason had nothing to do with his income. In college, he'd opened a bunch of credit cards and then canceled them when he was done. Nobody told him that canceling old accounts shortens your credit history and can significantly hurt your score. Nobody told him that a missed payment can sit on your credit report for up to seven years either.

"I had so much cash, I was like, I'll pay it later," he said. "Nobody told me these things."

Two credit fundamentals worth knowing before you need them:

Keep old accounts open even if you're not using them. The length of your credit history is a meaningful part of your score. Closing accounts shortens it.

Never miss a payment. A single missed payment can follow you for up to seven years regardless of your income or overall financial situation.

High income and strong credit are two separate things. One doesn't automatically produce the other. The time to learn that is before someone denies you a house.
