Our communities desperately need support through debt relief. Student debt was already at crisis levels before the pandemic, and as a result of COVID-19, millions of people have lost jobs, constantly fear falling ill, and are unprepared to resume student loan repayment. The $1.7 trillion in federal student loan debt doesn’t just hurt recent grads; faculty members also frequently struggle to pay back their loans. The pause on federal student loan repayment has been extended through May, but we know that borrowers need real relief from this immoral debt.
