Gravers have many uses in jewelry making, from stone setting and engraving to detailing and decorating your jewelry creations. You will learn how to select, prepare and use gravers and how to use them to set small faceted gems in a variety of styles. These include bead setting, pavé, and star setting. We will also cover the use of gravers in detailing and bright-cutting. While this is not an engraving class we’ll take a peek into that world as well. **Jewelry Fabrication Fundamentals**
With Stacey Hareid
Weekly on Sundays for from 10:00AM – 1:00PM for four sessions:

• November 8, 15, 22, & 29

This 4 week series offers new metalsmiths the skills essential to making beautiful jewelry in copper, brass and silver. Participants will gain knowledge from an experienced metalsmith and will make 2 pieces of jewelry, through sawing, texturing, shaping, basic soldering skills and cold connections with rivets. At the end of 4 weeks, leave with a finished pendant and ring band. For additional practice time in the studio, participants can attend a weekly Open Studio session, to use the tools under guidance from a studio monitor.

Join instructor Jennifer Raney of Envy Designs Jewelry for a one-day, hands-on workshop. This will be a fun and thorough introduction to fine silver metal clay. Explore basics and best practices for working with this amazing material. You will learn to layer, create texture, embed gemstones/wire, make molds, learn finishing techniques and other tips to make original pieces of jewelry. Students will complete either a pendant and earrings, or several charms. We will go over both kiln firing and torch firing.

We’ll begin with a Slotted Open Keyhole Clasp on day one and extend those skills into the more complex hidden lock-and-key in an Enclosed Lentil Clasp for day two. Students will enhance proficiencies in intricate measuring, sawing, and careful fitting of the “fiddly bits” of these clasps, and will come away with one or both clasps in near finished state (depending on experience). As they fabricate and test each mechanism, they’ll discover how to adapt these concepts for necklaces, bracelets, pendants, and one-of-a-kind pieces, transforming the clasp from an ill-considered necessity to an integral element of their design vocabulary.

I have been a Designer/Goldsmith for over forty years and a member of CMAG since 1989. My love of metals and jewelry started at the University of Oregon with Professor Max Nixon who influenced a generation of prominent jewelers and metalsmiths throughout the Northwest. His program was largely unstructured and encouraged freedom and creativity that I carried forward into my exploration and development of jewelry making. Mostly self-taught beyond school, the problem-solving skills and way of thinking that Max fostered have served me well. After doing craft shows and being a bench jeweler for many years, I established a retail jewelry store, Trios Studio, with fellow CMAG members, Kathe Mai and Deborah Spencer.

Sketching designs and problem solving on paper turned out to be an essential skill. Then creating a wax model to complete the project is what led to the success of our store. Adding wax modeling skills to your “tool box” can give you more flexibility in designing and creating cool stuff!

Debra is a full time goldsmith and metals instructor. She left the corporate world behind to become a jeweler over 20 years ago and she has relished the journey, incorporating the ancient arts of filigree, granulation, stone setting and enameling into her contemporary nordic designs. Debra combines her passion for creating with her love of teaching and sharing knowledge, and has shown and sold her work across the country in art fairs and galleries. She just celebrated 20 years as a metalsmithing instructor at the Multnomah Arts Center, and teaches at Nordic Northwest, the Sitka Center for Art, and the National Nordic Museum, and is currently the CMAG Education Chair. .ordic
