These two sweet elderly Pygmy goats joined our special needs herd yesterday! Brandy (black) is 15 years old and has severe arthritis and Nola is 10 and also arthritic, but spunky! Their former caretaker sadly had to move and knew they needed a special home where they could be properly cared for, for whatever time they have left. He was advised to just euthanize them but didn’t want to do that, when they still have so much life left. They now have their own special area with a pasture and warm stall with fluffy bedding and cushy dog beds. Yesterday we trimmed all of their very overgrown hooves, dewormed them, and started them on anti-inflammatory meds for their arthritis. Brandy had many mats in her hair so we clipped and cleaned and brushed her and they are now both feeling much more comfortable. They spent the afternoon grazing on the tasty grass and weeds and trying out new treats like fig newtons and grapes. We are so happy to be able to give them a wonderful home where they will always be loved and cared for.♥️🐐

A BIG thanks to everyone who came out for Poplar's Open House on Sunday! Despite the inclement weather, we were so grateful to see so many wonderful friends come to visit and support the rescued animals. Visitors strolled the grounds and were able to mingle and interact with the animals, listen to the awesome band, The Thrills, and snack on yummy vegan food. Special thanks to Dave Durbin for the amazing stage, Terry's Healthy Foods for donating their delicious drummies, to all the volunteers and staff who worked so hard to set up and make this a successful event, and to everyone who brought their raincoats and boots and came to donate and support the animals, even in the rain! We can't thank you enough for always being there for the animals, you are really helping us to make a difference! For anyone who was not able to attend, and still wants to help - donations can be made on our website at www.animalsanctuary.org/donate We hope to see everyone again at our Thanksgiving WITH the Turkeys event on November 21 with hopefully better weather!

Our power is out yet again for the last 7 hours- 3rd time this month! A HUGE thanks to our wonderful friends Patti and Laurie who very generously donated funds so we could purchase a new generator! (Our old one had died this Spring) And now despite the power loss all the animals have water and we are able to keep the refrigerators with all the fresh animal food in them running. We are so grateful, and got this new generator just In time! ♥️🐖🐄🐓🦃🐐🐏

Welcome to our cutest little new resident, Diana, who is a two month old piglet, rescued from a “pig scramble” in Maine. This is a contest at the fair where children chase terrorized piglets around a pen - if they manage to catch one they receive a cash prize and the piglet goes to be slaughtered. A young boy at the fair caught Diana- When he and his family realized what would happen to their piglet they opted to save her life and took her home - even though they lived in a neighborhood with no space for a pig. They reached out to their local sanctuary, the amazing Peace Ridge Sanctuary who stepped in and offered to transport Diana 12 hours to Poplar Spring, where she will be able to have a wonderful life with lots of pig friends! Diana was initially very afraid of people, snapping and nipping and not allowing anyone to touch her. She had been roughly handled by the farmer and the people at the fair- when the family requested to take her home she was grabbed by her rear legs and shoved head first into a feed bag! After only a few hours she realized she was in a safe place, and started relaxing and letting us gently pet her- and soon rolled over for her first belly rub! We are so happy the family made this kind choice, and that Diana will now have a long and happy life that all pigs deserve. ♥️🐖

These poor geese were dumped in a residential neighborhood in Rockville this afternoon! A kind man took them in but he has no place to safely keep them and there are foxes everywhere at night. Even though our power is out yet again from another storm, we told him to bring them to us at Poplar where we set up a stall in a safe and warm barn. He offered to bring water ( as we don’t have any without power- we are on a well) and flashlights! He found a unique way to transport them since he doesn’t have crates😂 We are looking forward to meeting them soon, and giving them a great life with lots of rescued goose friends.♥️

Waiting for the power company to replace a transformer after we had a way too close lightning strike! Everyone is fine, thank goodness. At least we have a beautiful sunset- the sky looks like it’s on fire!

Our sweet little gosling Ryan, who was found abandoned when he was only a few weeks old, is learning to swim in the pond with some help from Abbie and Andrea!♥️🪿
