🐾🚨 PLEASE STOP GIVING AWAY CATS & KITTENS FOR FREE! THEIR LIVES ARE WORTH MORE THAN THAT! 🚨🐾
❤️ FREE TO A GOOD HOME sounds like a kind and loving gesture. Unfortunately, not everyone looking for a free animal has good intentions.
As someone who loves and rescues cats, I cannot stress enough how important it is to know WHO you are giving these innocent, defenseless animals to.
💔 THE HEARTBREAKING REALITY
There are people who deliberately seek out free cats and kittens for horrifying reasons, including:
🐾 Animal abuse and torture: Some individuals intentionally acquire vulnerable animals to harm them.
🐾 Dogfighting and animal fighting: There have been documented cases of animals being used in connection with illegal fighting operations, including as bait.
🐾 Neglect and abandonment: Some people take animals on impulse, only to abandon them when they become inconvenient or expensive.
🐾 Animal hoarding: Animals can end up in overcrowded, unsanitary conditions without proper food, veterinary care, or attention.
🐾 Irresponsible breeding: Unspayed or unneutered cats may be acquired for repeated breeding and profit, with little concern for their welfare.
🐾 Dishonest adopters: Unfortunately, some people will say whatever they think you want to hear to get an animal.
⚠️ A SMILING FACE AND A PROMISE OF A LOVING HOME ARE NOT ENOUGH!
❤️ HOW TO PROTECT CATS & KITTENS WHEN REHOMING
✅ Charge a reasonable adoption fee. It can discourage some impulsive or dishonest inquiries, although a fee alone does NOT guarantee a safe home.
✅ Ask questions! Have they owned cats before? What happened to their previous pets? Do they understand the lifetime commitment?
✅ Request veterinary references. A history of responsible pet ownership can provide valuable reassurance.
✅ Verify their living situation. Do they own or rent? Are pets permitted? Will the cat live safely indoors?
✅ Meet potential adopters. Whenever possible, arrange a safe meeting and observe how they interact with the animal.
✅ Ask about other animals in the home. Make sure the environment is appropriate and introductions will be handled responsibly.
✅ Spay/neuter and microchip before adoption whenever possible. This helps protect against irresponsible breeding and improves the chances of a lost cat being reunited with its family.
✅ Use an adoption agreement. Include a provision requiring the cat to be returned to you if the adopter can no longer care for it.
✅ Follow up after adoption. A responsible adopter should understand that you care about the animal’s continued well-being.
🚩 WATCH FOR RED FLAGS!
Be cautious of anyone who refuses basic questions, wants multiple kittens without a reasonable explanation, pressures you for immediate pickup, provides inconsistent information, or refuses to discuss their plans for veterinary care.
And please remember: Paying an adoption fee doesn’t automatically make someone a good person. Thorough screening matters far more than money.
🐈⬛ THEY ARE NOT DISPOSABLE. THEY ARE NOT FREE ENTERTAINMENT. THEY ARE NOT OBJECTS. THEY ARE LIVING, BREATHING SOULS WHO FEEL FEAR, PAIN, LOVE AND TRUST.
A kitten doesn’t understand cruelty. A cat doesn’t understand betrayal. They only know that they are depending on the human who takes them home to keep them safe. 💔
If you can no longer care for your cat, please reach out to a reputable rescue, humane society, or experienced animal welfare organization for help finding a suitable home.
❤️ Rehoming responsibly is an act of love. Giving an animal to the first person who asks is a gamble with a life that cannot protect itself.
Please, please do your homework. Ask the uncomfortable questions. Check references. Trust your instincts. And never feel guilty about saying NO.
Because every cat deserves a forever home — not a tragic ending. 🐾❤️
