πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ On this day in 1945, World War II came to its formal end. On September 2, 1945, representatives of Japan formally signed the surrender aboard the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay, marking the end of the war.

A sharp salute and deep appreciation to the 16 million men and women who served and sacrificed in World War II, in the United States and across the globe, in places they could not pronounce or find on a map - they are the very definition of hero.

Today, we recognize and commemorate the 81st Anniversary of the end of the last World War. The men and women who served represent bravery, humility and valor - and we are a grateful nation for their contributions. The last living WWII veterans are deep into their late 90s and even 100s today. MAY THEIR MEMORY ALWAYS BE TREASURED. β€οΈπŸ€πŸ’™πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

Some moments are bigger than the picture. β€οΈπŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ Guardian and volunteer Pam G. and her young daughter have become regulars on our early-morning Mission departure Ground Crew, volunteering flight after flight to help ensure our veterans have a warm welcome and a great start to their day.

On the early morning of Mission 39, one of our veterans reached out and asked Pam’s daughter to hold his hand as they helped him find a chair. And just like that, generations connected.

A young girl offering her hand to a veteran who once served generations before her.

It was a simple gesture, but it captured something beautiful about Honor Flight: remembering, honoring, and connecting generations through service. This is why we do what we do. πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ΈβœˆοΈπŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ΈβœˆοΈ

Mission Accomplished! was an incredibly special day, and our hearts are π”½π•Œπ•ƒπ•ƒ of gratitude. We hope our veterans and guardians got a good night's sleep, and are waking today with smile and memories to last a lifetime. πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ On a sunny late summer day, we visited the D.C. Memorials, toured the sites and most notably, our veterans felt the long due admiration and appreciation of thousands along the journey, from DC to the amazing Homecoming crowd at FLL. πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ΈπŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έβ€οΈ

We have so many to thank for making yesterday possible. Mission 39 marked our first flight with a new partner carrier Southwest Airlines. Changing airlines, moving terminals at Fort Lauderdale, and operating out of a new airport in Washington, D.C. required a true village of committed partners. To the Southwest ground and flight crews, thank you for the incredible care you put into ensuring our heroes were transported to Washington, D.C. and home again safely, comfortably, and with the respect they deserve. Flying us with your newest "Independence One" aircraft was a meaningful gesture. ✈️

We are equally grateful to the team at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and the Broward County Aviation Department (BCAD), Airport operations and security, the Broward Sheriff's Office, the Police Honor Guard of Broward County (FL), and every agency, organization, and individual who played a role in supporting Mission Day.

Our Board of Directors and Committee Chairs, for whom this Mission is more than just a passion. ❀️ Our TRULY incredible HFSF Volunteer Corp - all those who traveled, as well as our Ground Crew and behind-the- scenes volunteers - we could ℕ𝔼𝕍𝔼ℝ do it without the selfless giving of your time and care. It takes a tremendous team behind the scenes to make an Honor Flight possible. Thank you for being part of our village and helping us give our veterans the day of honor they deserve.

To ALL who came out to Homecoming - you made the end of this day the emotional exclamation point these veterans deserved!! The groups including the Patriot Guard Riders, Sons of the American Revolution, boy scouts, young military groups...thank you for bringing your membership together to support this life-changing day for our vets. ❀️ To General Frank Donovan, Four Star General and Commander Southern Command and the many active duty military US Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) who joined the Welcome Line...you are the current generation we thank for protecting our freedoms.

Our guardians, who make these trips possible with your financial support as well as the incredible care you demonstrate with your veterans - we hope if yours was a new friendship, it becomes a lifelong one. ❀️

And to our π•π”Όπ•‹π”Όβ„π”Έβ„•π•Š - without whom there would be NO need for the work we do - we OWE you, THANK you, RESPECT and SALUTE you! πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ΈπŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ΈπŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ We hope we gave you a day of days, one to remember all of your life. Thanks to all and to anyone we missed!!! Happy Sunday! πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ΈβœˆοΈπŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ΈβœˆοΈ

"Mail Call" was so important to our eldest veterans, especially in a time when there was no accessibility of cell phones, email, or the internet.

On our homebound flight, we recreate the idea of Mail Call as a surprise to our veterans, and the emotion of it often brings many to tears. Letters from home....family, friends and strangers alike. All sharing appreciation, something very few veterans have truly felt.

We're on our way HOME, see you soon! πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ΈβœˆοΈπŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ΈβœˆοΈ
