🏠🔨 26 volunteers. One home. A huge first step toward a safer, healthier home.
On Saturday, September 12, we officially kicked off the 2026 Rebuilding For Heroes project season at Mr. Bruce’s home alongside a hardworking team from Lockheed Martin. Rebuilding For Heroes helps ensure that those who have spent their lives serving others have a safe and healthy place to call home- including veterans and surviving spouses, first responders, teachers, nurses, and other medical and hospital professionals.
Mr. Bruce, that service began in the U.S. Army. he served in the Armor branch and was awarded the Purple Heart, National Defense Medal, and Vietnam Service Medal in recognition of his service and sacrifice.
Now, our opportunity is to serve him.
In just one project day, 26 volunteers made tremendous progress toward helping Mr. Bruce remain safely and independently in his home- reducing hazards, tackling maintenance needs, preparing interior spaces for future repairs, and addressing issues that could have become bigger burdens over time.
Project highlights included:
🌳 Extensive yard and tree cleanup
🏠 Interior deep cleaning and paint preparation
🔧 HVAC troubleshooting and thermostat replacement
🧯 New fire extinguishers and a fire blanket
🧹 Shed and garage cleanout
⚡ Coordination with Oncor for safe utility work
🚛 Dumpster, bulk pickup, and donation preparation
Each task was about more than completing a project list. It was about reducing the physical and financial burdens of maintaining a home, preventing small problems from becoming larger ones, and helping protect Mr. Bruce’s ability to continue living safely in the place he calls home.
