We are thrilled to announce the completion of Operation Spread the Spirit 2025, which has filled our hearts with gratitude. Our community's generosity enabled nearly fifty children to shop with Pickens' finest through our Shop With A Hero event. Furthermore, another one hundred fifty children will receive gifts through sponsorships. We would like to express our appreciation to the Pickens Police Department, Pickens County Sheriff's Office (SC), Wal-Mart Pickens, Sav A Lot, Ingles Markets, Mount Sinai Baptist Church, East Pickens Baptist Church, The Mill Church, and Pickens Methodist Church for their collaboration. What Your Donation Means

Your generosity helps create unforgettable memories for children and families right here in our community. 💙

👮‍♂️ A Hero for Every Child
Each child is paired with a local hero, a police officer, firefighter, EMT, or deputy, and receives a gift card to shop for gifts at Walmart.

🚓 A Parade to Remember
Children get to ride in their hero’s emergency vehicle during a special parade through town, an experience they’ll never forget!

🍽️ A Meal to Share
Thanks to Ingles, every participating family also receives groceries to take home and Mt. Sinai Baptist Church provides a warm meal for the families during the event.

Children in our county depend on many resources for food. Teachers and other staff members do an amazing job identifying the needs of many vulnerable and sometimes hungry kids. Please consider purchasing items from this registry for food that will be distributed by our local schools.

We appreciate Walmart of Pickens for awarding a grant to support the children of Pickens County, which will help fund the community event, Shop With A Hero in December.

A big round of applause to Upstate College of Cosmetology for their incredible Back to Beautiful event, which brought smiles and self-assurance to local children, providing free haircuts, styles, and manicures to set Pickens County students up for success in the new school year.

Recently we had an emergency call that resulted in needing to transport a mother and her infant to a place of safety. We reached out to a local partner, Fostering Love, to see if they could provide us with a car seat because we had no way to secure the infant for the ride. On Wednesday, Fostering Love brought us three brand new car seats, one for every stage of growth, and donated them to our agency for when these emergencies arise. We would like to thank Fostering Love for their generous donation and their continued commitment to our community!

Congratulations to one of Pickens DSS’s best, LaTwania Curry, for her amazing accomplishment.

Congratulations to LaTwania Curry with the Upstate Region Child Welfare Services Division! LaTwania (shown on the left) received the Alston Wilkes Society’s 2024 Case Management Professional of the Year award today. The 62nd Annual Meeting & Awards Ceremony was held at Seawell’s in downtown Columbia.

This may look like a lot of bags to you, but to us, it looks like love. Operation Spread the Spirit 2023 is in the books. So many Pickens County children were lavished with love by our sponsors.They did an amazing job thoughtfully picking out presents for each child. We could not do what we do without community support. A huge shout out goes to East Pickens Baptist Church, Grace United Methodist Church, Pickens SC, The Mill Church, and Fellowship Community Church-Liberty. Pickens County DSS and South Carolina Department of Social Services are so grateful. From the bottom of our hearts, we thank you!

Fostering Love does many things for the children and families of Pickens County. One of our oldest programs is Operation Spread the Spirit which provides Christmas gifts to children involved with Pickens DSS through donors in our community. Do you know that we are also the sponsor for the community event, Shop With A Hero? Our goal this year is to raise $10,000 and let our hometown heroes shop with many children.
