Some of the most important parts of rescue are the ones most people never see.

Every day, our dog care team washes and sanitizes food and water bowls, refills fresh water, and makes sure each dog has a clean bowl waiting in their kennel.

It’s repetitive work. Detail-oriented work. And it matters.

Clean bowls and fresh water are basic needs, but meeting those needs consistently (and for such a large number of dogs) is part of providing thoughtful care to every dog who comes through NMDR.

The dogs may only see the finished product. We see the people behind it, doing the work day after day. 💛

❤️🐾 Sometimes the softest moments make the biggest difference. 🐾❤️

For two of our newest rescues, something as simple as a cozy bed is a beautiful beginning. 🥹

A soft place to rest. A little comfort. A moment to discover that life can be gentle, safe and filled with kindness.

And moments like these are made possible by people who believe every dog deserves a chance at something better.

We are incredibly grateful to Helping Hands COS | Colorado, the Presenting Sponsor of our 2026 Hope & Healing Gala, for their extraordinary generosity and commitment to our mission.

Your support helps us provide so much more than rescue. It helps us give these dogs the medical care, rehabilitation, patience and everyday comforts they need as they learn to trust and embrace their new lives.

Today, it's a soft bed. Tomorrow, it might be a favorite toy, a wagging tail or the courage to seek out a gentle hand. And someday, a couch in a loving home. ❤️

To everyone at Helping Hands COS, thank you for helping us turn little moments of comfort into beautiful new beginnings.

This is what your generosity looks like through the eyes of a rescued dog. 🐾❤️

🐩😂 Ruby has officially requested a kennel break. And apparently, she wasn't waiting for approval! 🐾❤️

Our little Poodle Ruby decided she'd had just about enough kennel time for one day, so she took matters into her own paws and made a dash for freedom!

Since she was safely out and clearly had some exploring to do, we decided to let her enjoy a few supervised minutes of adventure.

But of ALL the places she could have gone… the grass… the play yards… the interesting smells…

Ruby chose the rescue van. 🚐😂

Yes, the very vehicle that brings dogs to NMDR to begin their new lives! Apparently, Ruby wanted to inspect the transportation department. Or maybe she was checking to see if we were planning another rescue trip without her.

We're not sure whether she was looking for the driver's seat, requesting a road trip or simply making sure the next batch of passengers would be traveling in style. 😂

One thing is certain: Ruby may be little, but she's got BIG plans!

And honestly, watching these dogs discover their curiosity, independence and sense of adventure is one of the best parts of rescue. ❤️

Ruby, sweetheart, the van brought you to your new beginning. The next ride we're hoping for is the one that takes you home! 🐾❤️

Save this post for later. A few intentional habits can make a big difference in preventing a dog from getting loose.

For newly adopted dogs—and especially dogs who may be a flight risk—layers of prevention matter. Here are four areas to think through:

🏡 SECURE THE PERIMETER
Check fences and gates regularly for gaps, holes, weak spots, or unsecured latches. Keep gates locked when possible, and never leave your dog unattended outside during storms, construction, fireworks, parties, lawnmowers, or other situations that may startle them.

🚪 GUARD THE THRESHOLDS
Make sure exterior doors close completely behind you. During high-traffic moments like bringing in groceries, greeting guests, or answering the door, secure your dog behind a baby gate, in another room, or on leash. Make sure visitors and contractors know if your dog is a flight risk.

🦮 BE PRECISE WITH LEASHING
Always leash your dog when moving between a vehicle and a building. Slip the leash loop completely around your wrist and maintain a secure grip on the lead. For dogs still learning to trust and walk comfortably on leash, wait on walks outside secured areas until they are ready—and never allow a flight-risk dog to walk off leash. A safety light and GPS tracker can add another layer of protection.

🏷️ USE SECURE GEAR + CURRENT ID
A properly fitted Martingale collar can help prevent a frightened dog from backing out of their collar. Keep current identification and NMDR tags on your dog at all times, including after baths before they go back outside.

🐾 Lost-dog prevention isn’t about relying on one safeguard. It’s about building multiple layers of protection into everyday routines.

Save this post so these reminders are easy to find when you need them—and share it with another dog owner who could use them.

Now, imagine seeing the world through the eyes of a dog who is just beginning to discover what love feels like. 🥹

A soft blanket becomes a place of comfort. A toy becomes a reason to play. A special treat becomes a moment of happiness. A nourishing meal becomes a reminder that someone cares.

For many of our dogs, these are experiences they’re discovering for the very first time.

The little things really are the big things. And every item you send helps us fill their days with comfort, enrichment, nourishment and the simple joys every dog deserves.

We have so many precious lives depending on us, and we depend on the kindness of people like YOU to help us give them the best possible care.

When you see the world through the eyes of love, you realize that even the smallest gift can change a life forever. ❤️🐾

Thank you for helping us love them through every step of their journey to couch life.

We can’t change his diagnosis, but there is still so much we can give him ⬇️

When 10-year-old Wicket arrived at NMDR in Colorado, our veterinary team found severe periodontal disease that required eight tooth extractions, as well as infected ears that have since been treated. His legs are deformed, but he is still able to get around and enjoy gentle walks at his own pace.

His most significant diagnosis is testicular cancer that has spread to his bladder.

Right now, Wicket is safe and cared for in a temporary foster home. But temporary is just that—and we would love to find the adopter who can give him a permanent home where the focus can simply be on enjoying the time he has left.

Quiet routines. Gentle walks when he wants them. The reassuring presence of another friendly dog. A comfortable place to rest. And someone patient enough to let Wicket build trust at his own pace.

We can’t change his diagnosis, but there is still so much we can give him.

Wicket’s days still matter. We’d love to see them spent knowing he is home.

Visit NMDR.org to learn more about Wicket (Colorado location) and apply to adopt.

🎃🐾 We went to rescue 7 dogs… and came home with 22½. ❤️

Sometimes rescue gives you the most beautiful surprises.

Our Dogsville team headed out today expecting to save seven dogs. Instead, 22 precious lives came into our care… plus one tiny miracle who entered the world just last night. 🥹❤️

Meet Pumpkin, a sweet Bichon mama, and her brand-new baby, Gourdy, just one day old. 🎃🐶

There’s something incredibly special about knowing this little family will begin their next chapter surrounded by love, warmth and people who will do everything they can to give them a beautiful future.

We expected seven. We got 22½. And our hearts couldn’t be fuller. ❤️

Of course, every unexpected life means additional food, veterinary care and resources. But if there’s one surprise we’ll never complain about, it’s getting to save more dogs than we ever imagined.

If you’d like to help us care for these newest arrivals, please consider donating using the button on this post or through our Rescue Fund:

Please send some extra love to Pumpkin and little Gourdy as we care for them through these precious first days.

22½ lives. One incredible day. So many new beginnings. 🐾❤️

🐾 SENIOR SUNDAY 🐾
📍 Peyton, CO

Meet Twotwo, an 8-year-old Rat Terrier who tips the scales at a very respectable 25 pounds. That's a whole lot of terrier, and he's ready to share it with the right family.

Twotwo is the kind of guy who likes to read the room before he commits to the party. He might be a little shy at first, hanging back and taking it all in. But give him a little time (and maybe a snack or two), and that gentle, sweet personality starts peeking out like sunshine through the clouds. Fair warning: this boy is deeply motivated by treats. Consider it his love language, and also your cheat code. A few tasty bribes and you've got a friend for life.

Here's the secret to Twotwo's confidence: he does best with a four-legged buddy to show him the ropes. A resident dog at home gives him someone to follow, someone to nap near, and someone to look to when the world feels like a lot. He'll also need a securely fenced yard for safe sniffing, strolling, and sunbathing.

Twotwo does have special medical needs related to a throat abnormality, so his future family will want to read through his Special Medical Needs information. Our team is happy to talk through his care in detail during the adoption process, so no one is left guessing.

And because the right match matters most, an in-person meet and greet at our shelter is required. It helps make sure Twotwo, his people, and any resident dogs all click.

What Twotwo needs is simple: patience, a canine pal, and a family willing to let him settle in at his own pace. Give him that, and he'll give you a loyal, loving companion who's worth every minute of the wait.

4 things no one tells you about adopting a senior dog… 🤍

Maybe you’ve looked at a senior dog and wondered how much time you’d really have together.

But ask someone who has opened their home to an older dog, and they’ll probably tell you: age has a funny way of becoming the least interesting thing about them.

Because once they’re home, you start noticing something else entirely. You get a front-row seat to who they’re becoming—and sometimes, they have a few surprises waiting for you.

(1) You might get to watch them age backwards.
There’s a special kind of joy in watching your senior begin to heal and discover all the things that make life fun. You see the first zoomies. The toys start coming out. A playful side begins to appear. And somehow, the senior dog you adopted starts looking a whole lot like a puppy. 🥹

(2) You realize just how much life they still have to live.
Older doesn’t mean “out of time.” There are still walks to take, sunny spots to nap in, treats to taste, adventures to have, and so much love to give. Their age is only one small part of who they are.

(3) Your heart melts over the moments you once considered ordinary.
The first time they choose the couch. The first toy they carry around. The first time they fall asleep completely relaxed beside you. Suddenly, the little things don’t feel so little anymore.

(4) You discover that the second chance goes both ways.
You may start out thinking about the life you can give a senior dog. Then they settle in. Their personality unfolds. Their quirks become part of your everyday life. And before you know it, you’re wondering how home ever felt complete without them.

Senior dogs still have stories to write—and you could be part of some of their very best chapters. 🐾🤍

Visit NMDR.org to meet our available dogs, and share this with someone who might have a soft spot for seniors.
