July is Disability Pride Month!

At Pike County's Brighter Path, we proudly celebrate Disability Pride Month by recognizing the strengths, talents, and unique experiences of individuals with disabilities.

Disability Pride Month is a time to promote inclusion, advocate for accessibility, challenge stereotypes, and celebrate the fact that disability is a natural part of human diversity. Every individual deserves to be valued, respected, and given the opportunity to thrive.

This month, we encourage our community to:
💙 Learn about different disabilities.
💙 Use respectful and inclusive language.
💙 Support accessibility in our schools, workplaces, and community.
💙 Celebrate the achievements and voices of people with disabilities.

Together, we can build a community where everyone belongs and everyone has the opportunity to shine.

This was on a post I saw while I was scrolling through Facebook tonight. This is the reason our mingles are separatedby age.

"He is 14, but he really has the mind of a 2-year-old."

​If you have spent any time in the special needs community, you have likely heard this phrase used to describe individuals with intellectual disabilities or profound developmental delays. It is usually said with good intentions, but it is one of the most damaging and infantizing concepts we need to retire.

​Here is why the "Mental Age" theory is a myth:

A 14-year-old with developmental delays does not have the mind of a toddler. They have the mind of a 14-year-old with a disability. They have 14 years of lived experience, 14 years of physical growth, and 14 years of emotional memory.

​When we label a teenager or an adult with a "toddler mental age," it completely changes how society treats them:

​People start using high-pitched "baby talk" when speaking to them.

​They are offered preschool toys instead of age-appropriate, accessible activities.

​It strips them of their dignity and their right to bodily autonomy as they go through puberty and adulthood.

​An individual might need assistance with feeding or dressing, or they might communicate using an AAC device instead of spoken words, but they still deserve to be spoken to, respected, and treated like the age they actually are.

​Let's drop the mental age label.

This special evening is designed for teens with disabilities ages 13 to 16 and will feature:
