Pepperell Firefighters IAFF Local 5018 will begin sharing weekly updates summarizing the fire and medical calls that we respond to. These updates will help the community see the level of service and commitment that goes into keeping Pepperell safe- 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.

We are proud to provide an Advanced Life Support (ALS) ambulance service to the community, but it is important for residents to understand how our current staffing affects our ability to respond effectively and in a manner that is safe for the residents and responders.

Right now, we have two personnel on duty per 24-hour shift. This typically consists of one Paramedic and one EMT. There are some days where both of these members are not certified firefighters, as they have not been through the state training as of yet.

This does not meet NFPA recommended standards for emergency (medical or fire) responses. NFPA suggests that FD personnel deployed to a medical emergency shall include a minimum of two Paramedics, with two EMTs responding close behind (typically on fire apparatus). The NFPA suggested staffing for a fire engine is four personnel. At this time, Pepperell does not staff a fire engine with career members.

To provide the level of coverage that our community deserves, we should have a minimum of two Paramedics per shift, with an additional two EMTs. These personnel should also hold certifications as Firefighter 1 and 2. This ensures that we can handle multiple incidents safely, efficiently, and without delay.

We are sharing these updates so that we can educate and involve our community in understanding how critical public safety staffing is to your safety and ours. Your continued support helps us to advocate for the resources that are needed to protect everyone who lives, works, and travels through Pepperell.

We look forward to creating constructive and respectful dialogue between Pepperell Firefighters IAFF Local 5018 and the community.
