At Coleman Lake, south of Williams, AES volunteers teamed up with the Forest Service to extend fencing that keeps off-road vehicles out of the meadow.

Two well-traveled, user-created roads had damaged native vegetation and compacted the soil. Last year’s fencing blocked those routes, but vehicles began crossing elsewhere. This year’s extension helps close those gaps and more clearly defines camping areas.

Giving this ground a chance to recover means more native vegetation and forage for wildlife, including deer and elk. In the future, the Forest Service also plans to loosen compacted soil in order to support recovery.

This build capped a summer of
🌱Six habitat projects
🌱Ten volunteer weekends
🌱Approximately 2,100 feet of continuous rail fence
🌱And 2,400 feet of logworm fence across the Kaibab and Coconino National Forests.
🌱All protecting Arizona’s habitat to ensure the future of Arizona’s wildlife

Behind every great camp is a crew of volunteers who make it happen!

Our Jr. Elk Mentored Hunt Camp kitchen crew fed 120 people the first night and 50+ at every meal after that throughout the weekend. Our volunteer hunting mentors shared their time, knowledge and encouragement, helping 10 young hunters successfully harvest an elk.

From preparing meals to guiding young hunters in the field, you helped build confidence, teach responsible hunting and pass on our hunting heritage.

To our kitchen volunteers and hunting mentors: THANK YOU! Your hard work made this experience possible for these young hunters and their families.

Hunting pressure and other human activity can push elk into thicker cover, harder-to-reach terrain or more nighttime activity.

Seeing fewer elk doesn’t always mean they’ve left the area—they may have changed their routine.

On October 8–9, Arizona Elk Society returned to Middle Leonard Canyon to finish a 7-foot fence enclosure, installing panels, top and bottom rails, and the gate alongside an American Conservation Experience (ACE) crew and the Mogollon Rim District hydrologist.

The enclosure helps protect aspen, giving young trees a chance to grow and supporting ongoing research into aspen health. Healthier aspen stands mean more diverse habitat, food and cover for Arizona’s wildlife.

One more habitat project this season—and we need your help! 🌲

Join Arizona Elk Society at Kehl Canyon, November 6–8, 2026, to help restore an important meadow habitat.

A certified sawyer crew will remove small pines spreading into the meadow. Volunteers will help pile downed branches and debris, with gas trimmers available for additional clearing.

Why does it matter? Encroaching pines use soil moisture and can gradually change wet meadow habitat. Keeping the meadow open helps protect moisture, support meadow vegetation and restore habitat wildlife depend on.

We’re looking for about 20 volunteers, plus a trailer driver and weekend cooks!

📍 Meet at Kehl Campground. We’ll camp there if it’s open or across the road if it’s closed.

Bring a friend for a weekend of conservation, camping, good food and great company!

This is what persistence looks like. 🦌

Allie and her dad joined us at Jr. Elk Mentored Hunt Camp, where they learned from a volunteer mentor. Rain interrupted their hunt, but it didn’t end their determination.

They waited out the weather, headed back up later, and put those new skills to work. The result? Allie successfully harvested this trophy cow!

Congratulations, Allie—and thank you to her dad and the volunteer mentors who help young hunters build skills, confidence, and respect for Arizona’s wildlife. These lessons last long after camp ends.
