A Chapter of the Florida Anthropological Society

The Pensacola Archaeological Society is an association of people of all ages who are interested in archaeology. PAS was established to educate the public about the value of cultural resources and to enable people to become involved in the study of the past. We achieve our goals by hosting presentations on archaeology at our meetings, participating in Florida Archaeology Month, sponsoring a student scholarship award, and engaging in other forms of community outreach.

On November 10th, come join us at the Pensacola Archaeological Society for a lecture on "Legacy Collection In Crisis".

Legacy Collections stewarded across the country are facing similar problems of inaccessibility and degradation. Learn how legacy collections and the curation crisis are being addressed across the country and how a 1970s collection is being managed at UWF under current curation best practices and new NAGPRA regulations. Gabby Quigley, a graduate student at UWF focusing on Bioarchaeology, worked in Cultural Resource Management for two years before pursuing a master’s and works as the NAGPRA Graduate Research Assistant at the UWF Archaeology Institute.

The lecture will be held in the second-floor classroom of the Florida Public Archaeology Network building (207 E. Main Street, Pensacola, Florida, 32502) from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Refreshments and snacks will be provided for all attendees!
No pre-registration is required.

Early Spanish Florida lecture on October 13th is CANCELLED due to Hurricane Isaias' damage to Pensacola and the surrounding areas.

Join us for a lecture from Dr. Judy Bense, President and Professor Emerita at the University of West Florida on an overview of the first 250 years of the Spanish colony of Florida, 1513-1763. Covering the twists and turns of the Spanish strategies to build a Florida colony needed to hold the Atlantic coast and protect their gold fleets sailing across the Gulf Stream from Cuba to Spain. The Spanish attempts of military conquest and missionization of Native Americans, that failed and the encroachment by their European rivals resulting in the loss of Florida to the British.

The lecture will be held in the second-floor classroom of the Florida Public Archaeology Network building (207 E. Main Street, Pensacola, Florida, 32502).

Refreshments and snacks will be provided for all attendees!

Last month, the PAS board and some friends went to the reopening of the Indian Temple Mound Museum in Fort Walton!

One of the few mound complexes in the panhandle still standing, this site is definitely one to visit! This platform mound is a designated National Historic Landmark due to its significance and representation of the Pensacola Culture, whose peoples constructed it between 800-1400 CE.

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit both in the museum and of the reproduced structure on top of the mound. 10/10 would recommend making the trip to see this incredible archaeological site and museum!

You don’t want to miss this exciting lecture on March 10th from the UWF Dept. of Anthropology faculty on this past year’s UWF terrestrial and maritime archaeological field schools!

Join us to learn about the results of this recent fieldwork, including new excavations of EPIII, the third shipwreck of Tristan de Luna’s 1559 settlement of Penacola, conservation of these materials, and findings from the Luna settlement terrestrial site, along with the return to the Mission Escambe site!
