The first known, documented Native American Freemason was Thayendanegea also known as Joseph Brant (1743-1807), a Mowhawk Chief. He fought for the British during the French and Indian War and the Loyalists during the American Revolution gaining him a prestigious reputation among English royalty. Brant received his Masonic degrees in Hirams Cliftonian Lodge No. 814, London, England in April 1776. He had the distinction of having his Masonic apron given to him by King George III.

After the surrender of the Continental forces at the Battle of the Cedars in Quebec 1776, Brant endeavored to prevent the slaughter of the prisoners. Captain John McKinstry, a member of Hudson Lodge No.13 of New York, was about to be burned at the stake. McKinstry remembered that Brant was a Freemason, and gave him the “Masonic sign of distress” which secured his release. He and Brant remained friends for life. His legend is far too long to express in a single post, but his stories have been told and written about by men like Bro. Albert Mackey.
