When Season 10 began, I thought I was simply telling the stories of extraordinary people who had decided to make a difference.

Looking back, I realize they were teaching me lessons I would need in my own life.

This season brought a skiing injury, the Camino, the loss of my beloved Aunt Sheila, and some unexpected lessons about asking for help, taking one step at a time, walking beside others, and discovering that joy and grief can exist together.

Most of all, it reminded me that service is love put into action.

When I look back at Season 10 of the Charity Matters Podcast, I realize the lessons weren't just in the stories I was sharing. They were preparing me for some of the most personal moments of my own life.

This week's post is about what happens when the helper needs help, learning to take one step at a time, finding joy alongside grief, and discovering that perhaps love is the greatest measure of a life.

Two years ago, I thought publishing Change for Good would be the finish line.

Instead, it became another beginning.

Two years later, I’m still discovering how much its message applies to my own life. Change has a way of teaching us the same lessons in entirely new ways.

This October, I’m reflecting on a year of changes: our family growing, unexpected turns, difficult moments, joyful beginnings, and the perspective that comes from looking back and realizing how much can change in a year.

And maybe our job isn’t to fight the changes we can’t control, but to learn how to move with them.

What if the true measure of a life isn’t found in what we accomplish, but in how we love, and whether we show up?

Writing my Aunt Sheila’s eulogy changed the way I think about legacy. She spent 67 years in service, but when I asked her what she believed her legacy was, she simply formed a heart with her hands.

Love.

Her greatest lesson may have been even simpler: show up.

Show up for the birthdays. The hard days. The celebrations. The ordinary moments. Take the trip. Make the call. Give your people your time.

Because someday, our lives will be remembered in the stories people tell about us. And perhaps the most meaningful measure of all is simply this:

Were we there?

What if the thing you think will limit you… becomes the very thing that propels you forward?

September is Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Month, and I’m revisiting one of the most unforgettable conversations I’ve had through Charity Matters: my conversation with Hal Hargrave.

After a tragic accident left Hal paralyzed, he made a powerful shift from asking “Why me?” to “Why not me?”

That question became a catalyst for purpose.

Through the Be Perfect Foundation, Hal and his community have raised more than $7 million and helped more than 500 people and families living with paralysis access resources, independence, therapy, and hope.

But Hal’s story is about so much more than paralysis. It’s about perspective. Choice. Second chances. And the possibility that our hardest circumstances can become a platform for creating change in someone else’s life.

Life rarely unfolds exactly as we planned. A phone call, a diagnosis, an accident, or one unexpected moment can divide our lives into a before and an after. In those moments, it can be almost impossible to imagine that something meaningful could grow from what feels like loss. Yet, time and again, the remarkable people I meet through Charity Matters remind me that our greatest setbacks can become the beginning of something we never could have planned.

This week, in honor of Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Month, we are revisiting one of those unforgettable stories. After an accident left Hal Hargrave paralyzed, the life he had planned changed forever. However, Hal eventually stopped asking, “Why me?” and began asking, “Why not me?” What followed was a life of service, purpose, and hope through the Be Perfect Foundation. Hal’s story is a powerful reminder that we may not get to choose what happens to us, but we do get to choose what we do with what happens next.
