For those who don’t know me, my name is Robert, and I recently stepped into the role of Assistant Outdoor Program Manager with MN DAV Chapter #38 Park Rapids.
This position means a lot to me because not long ago, I was in a place where life wasn’t going the way I thought it would.
After making some major life changes, I found myself facing setbacks, closed doors, and plans that didn’t turn out the way I expected. It was a difficult period, and like many veterans experience at different points in life, I found myself struggling to find direction and reconnect with purpose.
During that time, I had the opportunity to attend a hunt in Africa through support provided largely by the Minnesota State DAV.
At first, I questioned whether I deserved to go and worried about the cost—even with most of the trip covered. But I went, committed fully to the experience, and it ended up changing far more than I expected.
What I found wasn’t just a hunt.
I found challenge, connection, perspective, and time outdoors that reminded me there is still so much life to experience. That trip had a real impact on me, and it reinforced something I now strongly believe: getting veterans outdoors can make a difference.
Not every veteran needs the same thing—but opportunities to hunt, fish, explore, connect, and simply get outside can have an impact that’s hard to explain until you experience it.
That’s why I accepted this role.
My goal with Hubbard County DAV Chapter 38 is to help create more opportunities for veterans to experience the outdoors and to make sure more people get the same chance I was given.
This is where community support matters.
If you’d like to help, support doesn’t have to mean writing a check.
• Landowners willing to provide access for hunts or outdoor events can make a huge impact.
• Guides, outfitters, anglers, and outdoorsmen willing to donate time or experiences can directly change lives.
• Businesses and community members can support events, sponsorships, tournaments, and veteran outreach efforts.
If you have opportunities for hunts, fishing trips, outdoor experiences, or would like to support these efforts in any way, we would love to connect.
I know firsthand the impact these opportunities can have—and I want to help bring that experience to as many veterans as possible.
Thank you for supporting our veterans and helping us get them back into the outdoors.
