Born on April 23, 1933 in Birmingham, Alabama, Annie Easley helped bring us to the moon.

In the 1950s, Easley got a job as a human computer with NASA, joining a class of women doing calculations by hand to develop rockets powerful enough to break the chains of gravity and function in the vacuum of space.

By the mid-1960s, the development of powerful electronic computers reduced the need for human calculations. Easley pivoted her skill set, learning computer programming and writing some of NASA's earliest programs, including the Centaur rocket engines, whose technology would be incorporated into the upper stage rocketry that would form a critical component for Apollo and later missions.

In 1977, Easley earned her bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Cleveland State University and continued her work at NASA until 1989, all the while providing mentorship to female scientists and scientists of color.
