The Stuart Sunrise Rotary Club supports local heritage through community initiatives. The club has ‘adopted’ the Pelican Hydro-Aeroplane Replica at the Elliott Museum. The aeroplane is a full-scale, masterfully crafted reproduction of the iconic 1911 seaplane which hangs prominently inside the Elliott Museum. Designed by local Sewall’s Point aviation pioneer Hugh Willoughby, a contemporary of the Wright brothers, Willoughby's patented double rudder and throttle systems featured on the Pelican were highly influential in early aviation history. The adoption fee helps to support the ongoing care and maintenance of this historic jewel.
The Elliott Museum, at 825 NE Ocean Blvd in Stuart FL is open Monday through Sunday 10:00am to 5:00pm. Visit their website: www.hsmc-fl.com

At our meeting this week, Jennifer Pelham, Director of the UF IFAS Extension of Martin County, presented a history of the land-grant university system and its role in today’s world.

Classes and workshops for homeowners and those involved in agriculture and landscaping are a mainstay of the Extension program. Extension staff can assist homeowners and HOAs with plant selection for drought-tolerant, site-appropriate landscaping. The master gardener program is well known to those who seek answers to their questions.

Jennifer then spoke about Citrus Greening, a bacterial disease spread by an insect from Asia, which has devastated roughly 90% of Florida's commercial citrus industry with no known cure. Citrus greening does not affect soil, so replanting remains viable. UF research centers in Fort Pierce and Lake Alfred are actively working toward a cure.

As part of our club’s renewed dedication to PolioPlus, a $100 donation was made to PolioPlus in honor of our speakers this month: Dr. Leslie Judd from Clark Advanced Learning Center Dan Burd from Speak Life End Bullying Jill Marasa from Ashley Capital, and Mike O’Leary from of the Treasure Coast.
PolioPlus aims to eradicate polio worldwide through mass vaccinations, ensuring that children do not suffer permanent paralysis or death. The program also builds lasting health infrastructure.
