We are honored to host Kawaiʻula to open up STEAM-CON on Saturday, September 26 at 2p. Kawaiʻula is a community-rooted nonprofit dedicated to caring for Waiakahiʻula and the surrounding ahupuaʻa of Puna, Hawaiʻi through mālama ʻāina, kīpaepae, cultural education, ceremony, and community gatherings.

No'eau has invited HAAS & ASC to join their initiatives as they continue to care for our ʻāina, honor the stories and traditions of place, and strengthen the relationships between ʻāina, ʻohana, and community.

The Coral Bone Sculpture Project is a participatory social art initiative facilitated by artist Caroline Holmes. Community members create small clay coral forms to deepen care and connection with coral futures.

Holmes assembles these community-made coral bones into large-scale installations in civic spaces, transforming many individual contributions into powerful artworks that inspire collective stewardship of our reefs.

Thank you for the meaningful work you do, we are excited to host you at STEAM-CON, Caroline!

On islands with limited resources and no usable metals, Hawaiians and their ancestors developed crafts and technologies to meet all their needs, including building large voyaging canoes that could travel 2,500 miles and back. As they settled the islands of Hawai'i, they brought with them key plants needed for food, wood, fiber, oil, and medicine.

In our new Trades & Traditions club, students will explore different arts to produce objects using traditional methods and materials with the guidance of Dr. Lanakila. This will include stone work, carving, plaiting, and more.

During the first week of clubs, students wove mats using coconut fronds to sit on as they work through their next projects!

We absolutely adore what Hawaii Artist Collaboration does - bringing master craftsman together on Hawai'i island to create pieces that are auctioned off to raise money for future collabs, teacher's art supplies, and student scholarships.

We feel fortunate to have this effort brewing in our wider community and also to be featuring several of the artists at STEAM-CON next month!

ASC is seeking to expand our team and our impact for Hawai'i Island residents.

The Community Engagement Strategist is responsible for building the relationships, visibility, and systems that position ASC for long-term growth and an ambitious capital campaign. Through community engagement, brand stewardship, strategic partnerships, sponsor and funder cultivation, volunteer and participant engagement, and constituent relationship management, this position will play a critical role in serving as a visible ambassador to help strengthen ASC’s connection with the community.

We might be biased, but that must have been one of the coolest summer camps offered this year on Big Island!

15 paid staff eating free lunches with 90 students spanning grades 4-11 meant well over 100 households were supported by this program - at no cost to them!

Local art & science experts guided kids through classes like screen printing, filmmaking, pottery and Japanese embroidery.

Mala fun made way for plant-based global cuisine. Place-based science met mixed media art.

Some kids preferred to be out skateboarding while others learned how to master their money in a surprisingly popular Financial Literacy course. What!?

That meant 360 collective hours of hands-on learning opportunities were packed into those two weeks.

But more than what any quantitative data could ever point to… these summer programs at ASC have a way of nourishing participants on a deep and meaningful level.

Thanks for bringing the vibes and conjuring the magic for these keiki… truly 🤙
