We say goodbye to a familiar friend on our shoreline.

During last nights brief, but powerful storm that rolled through the area broke our beloved "Sad Tree" in half.

For many Oyster Bay-East Norwich residents, "Sad Tree" was more than just a tree—it was a local landmark.

Standing along the beach at Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park, the tree became one of the most photographed spots in town, serving as the backdrop for countless family portraits, prom photos, engagement shoots, and memories made by the water.

Local lore has it that Sad Tree earned its name after suffering damage during Hurricane Sandy in 2012, leaving it with the distinctive drooping shape that made it instantly recognizable. Whether that story is fact or folklore, the name stuck, and so did the affection residents developed for this unique piece of Oyster Bay.

As we say goodbye to this beloved fixture on our shoreline, we're reminded that some of the things that make a community special aren't grand monuments or famous landmarks—they're the places that quietly become part of our lives and memories.

Do you have a favorite photo or memory of Sad Tree? Share it with us in the comments.

⭐As we kick off another Cruise Night, a friendly reminder that Cruise Night etiquette is:

✔️ Respect fellow attendees, volunteers, and local businesses
✔️ Help each other out with parking - older cars don't have backup cameras!
✔️ Drive safely and responsibly
✔️ Keep burnouts, excessive revving, and reckless driving off the streets
✔️ Help keep Oyster Bay clean and family-friendly
✔️ Support our local restaurants and shops while you’re in town
✔️ Please admire the cars without touching them — many owners put countless hours into maintaining their vehicles. Parents, please help remind children to look with their eyes and not their hands.

It also made the front page of the Oyster Bay Herald.
